Anyone been to Oktoberfest? Or more specifically driven in a campervan to oktoberfest?

My mate has been for the past 2 years and wants to sort hotel and flights now. Whereas i want to drive taking my campervan. I've heard there are a few campsites near and that you can get shuttle buses in.

Yes, driven my campervan to Oktoberfest this year, though I suspect you are refering to Oktoberfest in Germany rather than Cheddar, in which case no, but I'd like to one year.

Yes, its in September (in Munchen) and full of Germans officially enjoying themselves.

Germans are allowed to enjoy themselves twice a year; Carnival and Oktoberfest - these are also the only 2 occasions when its ok for colleagues to refer to each other by their firstnames.

Yes in the early 90's.. The Army where kind enough to send me to Germany the week it was on..

Can't say as I remember a great deal about it..

But then all we did was drink.

A lot.

often. but i get to stagger home to the GF's 'rents place. a thirty minute journey took me three and a half hours one time. and i was sick.

there are plenty of campsites around to the south of munich, same direction as the alps . could tie in a few a few days biking quite easily around Tegernsee,Bad Tölz,Schliersee each around 45 mins from munich's Hauptbahnhof (15-20 minute walk to the Wiezn')with trains running till late (Weizn closes at 11pm).

but be prepared. it is vrey touristy and ein Mass (1 ltr) of beer is around 8-9€; more than double what you'd pay in the bier halls in the town.

worth it for the buzz, though. and the fraulines in their drindls (when they've got big bristols).

expect to see a lot of [url=

AUSSIES and

and if you're [s]SFB[/s] selective in where you take a breather from the beer tent then some of THIS(i particularly like the guy helping the ladies across the conveyor belt; probably doesn't even work there!)

As an experience for a day it's brill, but wouldn't want to do more than that - it's basically drinking and funfair. Make sure you book seats in advance in one of the big tents for the time you want. IIRC you can't get served a beer unless you are sat down (no bar area) and during the evening all the tables are fully booked.

The big beer tents are really big - about 5000 people each

And don't stick twiglets in your ears or the barmaids will savage you with their teeth.

I went last year, As mentioned before you have to pre-book in one of the big tents. Otherwise you'll be just hanging around in the cold doing absolutely nothing, theres no beer outside as I remember. Most of the Germans are just being loud, singing bavarian songs and getting right in the spirit and having a laugh. Most of the Americans are just shell shocked by the whole thing, and most british are very pissed, shouting fairly abusive football chants and just being aggressive W***kers. Its pretty embarrassing to be associated with them and I dont know why the rest of the world puts up with it.
