I want to change my car early next year so no more Ikea trips happen. Will have approx. £1000 fot it. Maybe a tad more.
I fancy a family hatchback, diesel ideally. Megane from 1999 to 2001 fits the bill and I like French diesels. Anybody driving one? What are they like? Or should I go for an Astra? Is it possible to get a 1.7l diesel Astra in a good nick for so little?

Renaults are always pretty comfy & luxurious for their price & year. But my experience is that spares and repairs are surprisingly pricey. Build quality is variable. Have you checked the various car websites (what car etc)?

Heard bad things about reliability of current Renaults.

I like the newer ones better but can't afford them as they're over £3500 typically.
The Astras are looking good too but it seems they tend to be estates and I need a smaller car. Golf? Huge mileages and tend to be abused IME. Maybe a Peugeot? Our 406 has so far been faultless despite my driving (lack of) skills. But I find the Megane Coupe so pretty...
