Of the 'UNKLE as a band' albums I reckon War Stories is the best. They all been getting a bit samey for me recently - maybe I'm getting old.
edit: Handsome Boy Modelling School are certainly worth a listen. And I've heard Deltron 3030 are coming back

The Time Has Come E.P. (1994) is a good place to start. First release I think..... It has a Great Sub bass solo IIRC. A great slice of early '"Trip Hop Baby!"' if not the UnKLe you know today.
It pre-dates DJ Shadow's involvement and has Tim Goldsworthy of LCD Soundsystem fame on Production duties.
Funnily enough I saw James Lavelle Walking out of a top London Restuarant last week, so he must be doing alright in these cloud based media times.

Personally love all UNKLE albums - they're all pretty different and all great in their own way.
War Stories, Never Never Land and Where Did the Night Fall are a little bit of a surprise after the experimentation of Psyence Fiction, but still very good albums containing some fantastic songs.

+1 Psyence Fiction & Never Never Land - try to get the extended edition (maybe US import?) as it has some great instrumentals.

Proper underrated are unkle. Best albums are psyence fiction, get the version with the Ian Brown version of unreal ("be there") and I love war stories too.
Check out sixtoo, Alias and the godlike Buck 65. Much to enjoy.

I have seen Unkle live 6 times so far and every time has been amazing. I think Glade festival was probably the best of the bunch though. I wish Lavelle would DJ out a bit more often too. Used to see him play at Fabric years ago and it was always an eclectic ride.

There was once an amazing website which was like a musical family tree / influences - was great for discovering new sounds related to favourites. I know last.fm etc do similar, but this was very visual and v.addictive clicking. Wish I'd bookmarked it.

Back on Unkle, the remix of Dolphins were Monkeys by Ian Brown is well worth hunting down.

If you do want to dig a bit deeper then it's worth checking out David Axelrod. He produced some amazing albums in the 60s and 70s which have been heavily sampled by DJ Shadow etc. Songs of Experience and Innocence are an incredible musical journey inspired by William Blakes poems, deep but beautiful stuff.
The Mo'wax Excursions were good. Shadow and the groove robbers 'in/flux'is often said to be the best trip/hip hop track of all time (if you can get around the folk arguing about it being hip hop or not!) When I heard it around 94 or possibly a year later I missed it first time around and was blown away by it.
I have a few of the Excursions on vinyl delving in about different genres. The one with 'io - Claire' was the techno excursion and it put to rest my thoughts on what techno was (going by the p*sh I was hearing on the radio) Fk me.. So good!
The others had twig bud,the groove robbers,chief excel,I think Olde scottish - wildstyle was on them. (great track)
My fav is probably :::reaches down for it!::: 'MW018' 12". R.P.M - 2000. A lot of these can be picked up on Vinyl for not a lot of cash and I'd buy them again in a minute.
If you do come across them,buy them. If you enjoy the suspense of what these tracks are like then it would be cool to hear them blasing out from a record deck and through speakers rather than real poor youtube recordings. They'll no doubt blow some of you away.

My personal faves are War Stories and Where Did The Night Go, though TBH there isn't a bad UNKLE album IMHO, not even a below average. certainly quite big differences from Psyence Fiction to Where Did.... but a pleasing progression for me.
Just be careful of remixes, they really are for the devoted or maybe DJs who will mix them again.

@ Rewski. I love that Gus gus track. All this stuff is pretty much what I've been into for ages. Before this I think I was listening to nwa,public enemy,del etc around 88-92 along with indie stuff around the same time and then a bit of dance stuff (like Sasha & Digweed's renaissance)that I might have got into from late sat nights listening to radio 1 or something. I remember buying the re-issue of Dj Shadows In/flux around 94,taking it home and switching on the record player,and thinking 'where have I beeeeeen all my lifeee listening to all that crap in the pasttt?!' as this was far more me. Same when I bought the Dj Krush Meiso album. Bought it in Our Price after GLB (sometimes on here ;O))recommending it. Got it home and played it through and 'Duality' came on. Nearly fell asleep at the first part then the mash up of god knows what kicked in. From then on,this was it!
Ahhhh,thank the lord for an 18 year old James Lavelle with the coolest record label in the world. Have we seen anything like that since?

Agree re: James Lavelle, he certainly had a good ear, I was fortunate enough to know a few people in the music industry around that time, I managed to get a few white labels promos, influx being one, sadly all sold on ebay, most of my mo wax stuff went to Australia. I recall trying to get a copy of entropy was pretty impossible then, now it's on youtube for everyone to enjoy, even with web compression it still sound ****ing amazing. There were so many great record shops in London then too, Atlas, Fat Cat and Honest Jons (were Lavelle used to work if I remember correctly). One of my best experiences of the time was a one off club night at subterannea, the music was rare and obscure deep funk 45s by no other than Josh Davis, I doubt I'll ever hear records like that again.
