Just bought a wood burning iron for reproducing mainly portraits. Any tips or advice for a novice.

Practise...obviously.
Stay clear of course grained woods as the hardness difference between the grain makes it very hard to be consistent.
Choose close grained timber.
I'm not a pyrographer by the way but have done bits and bobs.
