my fiat scudo 2l hdi is not keen to start. it looks as if pre-heat is not staying on long enough as pre-heat light goes out very quickly.
i managed to start it after several (very short) pre-heats.
is this likely? many forum posts seem to suggest replacing glow-plugs but i've a feeling it might be system controlling them which is at fault
knowledgeable help greatly appreciated!

I'm no expert on Fiat systems but judging from your explanation I would suggest that the coolant temp sensor may be at fault, therefore causing the engine management system to think the engine is hot and reduce the amount of glow plug 'on time'.
If you know someone with access to diagnostic equipment, plug it in and have a look at the coolant temp to see if it matches with what would be expected, ideally with a cold engine of course...

Is the fuel pump OK?
What state is the fuel filter in?
If it's a common rail HDi engine the glow plus aren't really used until very low temperatures.
For example, in most of the PSA Group's HDi engines the glowplugs aren't used at all for starting purposes* until circa -5.
*In some of the engines they do operate after start-up to help reduce emissions.
This video is not obviously relavent, but it does demonstrate some info about fuel pumps:
Getting to the in-tank fuel-pump in a van can be a lot more difficult than a car

ha ha 🙂 thanks esselgruntfuttock.
and thanks everyone else for some good info. sounds like it's clearly a sensor rather than the glow plugs. guess i'll need to plug it in.
knew i shoulda got an older tdi without EMS...
So if the coolant temp sensor is wrong, but PSA HDI engines don't really use glow plugs (it is one of them), what would be the problematic effect of the sensor not working?
btw once started and warmed up a bit, but not all that much compared to normal running temp, it started no problem.
cheers again for yr help
