Look out for Stephen Leather books about Dan Shepherd.

they are good. basically about an ex SAS bloke now undercover copper in serious crime squad going in with proper crims.

Now reading The girl with the dragon tattoo series of books. Good too but far more complicated than the Dan Shepherd books, in a good way though.

+1 For the Stieg Larsson books (Dragon Tattoo). Good holiday reading!

The One, Two, Three and Away series are of fundamental significance. A must read for all.

Two great books I've recently read are:

Frank Collins - Baptism of Fire

Duncan Falconer - First into action

Mark Cavendishes book, and also Bradley Wiggins book, both about road cycling but very good reads, read Brads first, then Cavs, and spot the difference.

Cav is a bit more basic and down to earth, and must have stired a few freindships up.

The Junior Officers Reading Club, Patrick Hennessey.

A History of Modern Britain, Andrew Marr.

Oh...and crispy bacon, since you're the only other person I've ever found who's read Baptism by Fire, have you ever read Barefoot Soldier? The Johnson Beharry book?

I have enjoyed some of Irvine Welsh's books but they're not to everyone's liking
