My friend had her car tested the other day and somehow they managed to blow the fuse feeding the cigar lighter - why would the tester have needed to plug something in there?
Coincidentally something similar happened to a friend on a car forum recently, the suggestion was that the tester had plugged an OBD reader in but i cannot find anything in the MOT manual to say why they might have needed to do that.
My OBD reader doesn't need a power supply but maybe some do? But again I can't see why they would need to plug in unless maybe a light had come on during the test and they were being helpful and cleared it?
The circuit is usually shared with a few other things so it may not be the 12v socket that blew the fuse. On my Skoda it's shared with the radio, interior light and one of the other accessories I don't have in my spec. Pretty annoying when your phone charger fries it and you lose the stereo on a long journey!
Yes, that's how she realised, the whole centre console is dead but i cannot think of anything else that might have caused it to blow.

One way of doing it is when you normally have one of those USB charger things, and then you just absent-mindedly shove a USB plug into the cigarette lighter without noticing that the charger device thing isn't actually present, thus shorting it out 😳
ahem
Did they do any work to get the car to pass the MOT, or was it MOT only?
Centre console sometimes has to come out if hand-brake adjustment is needed.

sounds a bit like the old - you fitted my tires now my exhausts fallen off ..... must be your fault.
when was the last time the cigar lighter was noted to be working.
OBD is optional for measuring temp and revs on euro 5 and 6 during test but only one approved for use and it doesnt need the cigar lighter at all.
i was going to ask why you need an odb reader for an mot. thats worrying

+1
Sounds like coincidence. They can use diagnostics to check the engine is upto temperature, but 99% seem to just put a note to say "revs and temperature checked manually" (i.e. it passed first time even though it was probably cold and revving too high).
As noted by someone else, the cigaret lighter is a rubbish socket design, way t easy to short it out.
