MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
1) Is it needed? (have MS Defender keeping care of W7 in parallels)
2) If yes, are there any decent free versions?
3) Which is best in terms of efficacy, and least impact on system performance?
1) Is it needed?
In principle, no*. As far as I'm aware there aren't any OS X viruses 'in the wild'. Little Snitch is worth a look though, as the Mac firewall only stops incoming connections - it doesn't stop outgoing ones like Windows firewalls usualy do.

*There are alos those who would argue Windows antivirus isn't really necessary
You will burn in hell for mentioning a mac on here 😉
Don't know if any are available , I have an iMac and have never seemed
To need one yet , would be interested but don't think you will get a definitive
Answer on stw
Run Little Snitch and that's it. No issues.
20 years on a mac - only ever picked up one worm virus, and that was non malicious
I'm running a number of things including VirusBarrier Plus [free] for peace of mind:
MacScan, to deal with tracking cookies & other web rubbish as well as Ghostery on Chrome.
+1 for Little Snitch.
Always run my Mac in Stealth Mode.
So far all's been well.
Firewall switched on & don't pirate software = no viruses
The only malware I'm aware of for OSX has been put into pirated software (MS Office/Photoshop IIRC)
Having said that, Macs are not inherently secure, they regularly get defeated at the pwn2own competition for example
I had a virus on my work mac recently. Fortunately IT insist on anti virus on all computers, no matter what OS. Why would you risk it?
We use software with a name that escapes me, it has a shield icon though...

That narrows it down a bit then 😉
