Noticed towards the end of last year that I was getting grumpy during sunny spells, normally the opposite of what I would expect. (By grumpy I mean either properly snappy and snarky, or on the verge of tears the whole time, not a pleasant place to be).

Recently started taking antihistamine's again as a result of early hayfever and within a few days I was snappy, snarky and properly grumpy again. Hadn't felt as bad for ages, perhaps since last summer. Seems I may be having side effects of antihistamines which is very negatively affecting mood and mental health.

Has this affected anyone else? and what is the alternative to OTC hayfever tablets, as being able to breathe, and not being a miserable git would be a good combination.

im useless and Piriton and Zirtec don't get in bad mood but they turn me into a zombie. Loperamide i'm better on and there's a new short-acting Benadryl that I was good on

Irritability / confusion is there as a rare side effect of piriton ( so presumably other antihistamines as well)

Try other antihistamines and see your GP

There's a couple of different types, I'm not allowed to take the "normal" Piriton type because of work so take the Loratadine ones as they're non drowsy.

Might be worth giving them a go?

My wife burned all my Zirtec as I was even more of a PITA than usual so I definitely think there's something in it.

I use Beconase nasal spray - the effect builds up over a couple of weeks but I've found it very effective against nasal symptoms and wheeze. And obviously it's far more localised than a tablet.

You could swap to whichever one of cetrizine/loratadine/piriton that you're not currently on.

I used to take beconase from may to july every year bit I started to suffer quite disturbing (angry, depressed) withdrawal when I stopped so don't now. Fexofenadine worked well but gave me backache so it'll be back to loratadine this year.

Loperamide

I'd be grumpy if I took that for allergies as it's to stop things coming out of your bottom.

It certainly does on one of them for me. I become snappy and nasty (more than usual), unfortunately I always forget which one and end up buying the wrong one at the start of the hay fever season. I'm ok with loratidine I think, it's whatever is in piriton that sends me off on one.

Ceterizine (the one in Piriton?) knocks me out by about 7/8pm if I take it, so I stick to Lotaradine and some sort of nasal spray.

They don't affect my mood, but they make me rather sleepy and upset my stomach if I have a couple of beers on top of them.
They are pretty powerful drugs considering you can get them OTC.

Ok, so not just me then. Loratadine is causing the issue I think, Cetirizine doesn't seem to work at all. Might try just the nasal spray and see if that works, trip to the GP booked in as well.

Piriton contains chlorphenamine, which swmbo confirms is used as a sleeping aid in hospital (she's a nurse before anyone asks).

I usually take piriton, or a non brand equivalent, but it does knock me about a bit. I hadn't really considered effects on mood though, might explain a few things.

Interested in peoples reaction to ceterezine. I'm down to 2 a day for chronic urticaria, was on 6 plus ranitidine & plaquenil.
The main side affect I'm getting is feeling wiped out after work & needing a nap. Trouble is I feel like absolute shit afterwards.
My dermatologist told me not to bother with other antihistamines.
I've now mostly got the hives under control by avoiding tomatoes & a straight shot of adrenaline from mountain biking does wonders.

As above, Ceterizine is supposed to be non-drowsy, as opposed to chlorphenamine in piriton which definitely makes most folk feel sleepy. Interested to hear of people getting knocked out on ceterizine.

KiwiJohn - could be a drug interaction, I suppose, given the cocktail you're on. On the bright side, at least you won't be getting malaria any time soon.

That would be a bonus, but I've given that one away now.

I'm practically comatosed on benadryl or the "older" generation anti-histamines. I now take loratadine and that's been much better. I don't know about mood change though, I'll have to ask the other half.

I've been very dissapointed with anti-histamines; none of them make me at all drowsy, which is a shame as it would be great for long haul flights. I also don't find Zopicone works at all on me....

Another Cetirizine user. No side affects. Some days need two even though it’s one a day but that’s rare and typically when I been up at the crack of dawn and then burning the midnight oil so presumably the first tablet has worn off.

Took Piriton for years too with no noticeable side affects but they are on the ‘no no’ list at work so stopped.

Lotaradine works for me but not as effectively as the Cetirizine.
