Can anyone recommend other things to do in the area? Not sure I want to ride both days we are there at the moment, so would like some other options.

Thanks.

Check out:

There is loads to do if you don't want to bike, walks around the gardens, wander round the castle. There are stalls in the court yard and sometimes there is a farmers market. A great place just to chill.

Edinburgh is about 1.5 hrs drive away if you need a bit of retail therapy.

Oh well you probably know about the other place I was going to recommend as well then - New Lanark (World Heritage Village). Prolly about an hour from Drumlanrig. Not everyone's cup of tea, but I think its pretty interesting.

Culzean castle near Ayr worth a visit (not sure how close this is)

Plenty Abbeys and other historic sites in D&G if you fancy that

Visitor things to do -

Abbey - New Abbey stunning setting and ruin

Castle - Caerlaverock wonderful triangular castle with pleasant walk and reconstructed seige implements http://www.caerlaverock.co.uk/

Walks - stunning cliff walks at Balcary point or walk on water at Kippford

Shopping - Castle Douglas and Kirkcudbright are pleasant enough towns small though pretty. Marketing themselves as a food town and and an art town respectively !

PS there as also stunning riding beyond the gates of Drumlanrig - but no doubt you know that - and Rik will keep you right

If you go to Castle Douglas and the farmers market is on, be sure to get some Highland Cow steaks/Burgers/sausages as they are so good they could cure a vegetarian 😉

New Lanark is, IMO, incredibly dull. Once you've seen one spinning jenny you've seen them all. it's got a very interesting history, but it's not really worth the visit.

Wanlockhead lead mine is pretty good, though I've not been there for a long time. Not for the claustrophobic obviously.
