... in a desperate attempt to keep an interesting thread on track and avoid it being hijacked by someone's (probably justified, I suppose) personal angst with his chum...

There's an odd dissonance about this forum, where people who seem normally happy to snarl and bitch at each other suddenly flock en masse, to reassure someone who is in real distress - eg: C_G and her recent loss.

Is that what it takes, then?

My personal mantra is that there is good in everyone but with some people you just need to dig a little deeper.

On a forum you can be anyone you want to be, if that's what floats your boat. If however you intend to ride with people then you have to roughly conform with social etiquette.

As you have pointed out in your example, people can be amazing. I've received a large number of texts and e-mails with such kind words written. Is that to do with how I am in person, ie my online persona is one and the same as the one in real life?

It saddens me when people disagree in a particularly unpleasant manner. Why do they need to spew out such vitriol?

Dunno whether I've answered your question though!
