Can I run a 2.5" NTFS external hard drive i.e powered only by the USB port on a typical tablet PC (in my case the Lenovo IdeaPad A1)? i.e is there enough oomph to run it. I want to transfer files from an SD card to the drive.

I'd say probably not (could be wrong though) do Lenovo not have a support site where you could ask the question.

USB is a standard, 500ma is the max current. If it works on your pc without additional power the tablet will drive it. Honeycomb 3.1 going forward supports USB external storage. Give it a try.
