Chromecast with Android TV seems to do a good job according to my initial search.

Using it on my Firestick 4K. It's pretty good apart from indexing content is slow. Actual playback is good and it supports HDR including Dolby Vision and will set the refresh rate of the screen to match the content (to prevent it juddering on 24 fps movies for example)

Nivida shield. Had the original since it came out 7 yrs or so ago. Still gets updates, still works as well if not better than when we first got it.

I treated myself to the latest Nvidia Shield TV Pro during the last Black Friday sales. Pretty nifty bit of kit although the latest firmware update has screwed up a lot of features (Nvidia say they are working on it and all will be fixed shortly).

Picture quality on Netflix, Amazon and HBO Max are a vast improvement on the built-in players on my TV. I've also installed a load of emulators and it can play old Mega Drive, SNES, Playstation, N64, and Dreamcast games. I'm very happy with it.

Nvidia shield user here as well. I only use it for YouTube, Netflix and the occasional dip into Doom or resident evil games so I probably go nowhere near its capabilities. Happy with it since the initial 2015 purchase.

fire tv (cube and 4k on different tvs). bit fiddly to get it on in the first place, pretty flawless after that. Get the quickest one you can

Exactly the same here. Bit pricey compared to some other options, but it's been great.
I only use it for playing my own files from NAS using Kodi and BBC iPlayer though. I have no experience with the streamed games, etc.

I would probably say that anything that runs Android TV would be good. Especially if it's got a microphone on the remote.

Not sure what that is but Kodi is a very capable media player regardless of where the files are coming from. I use it on my Android TV with a network share, it plays everything including some that didn’t work with VLC.
