Never heard of it before-

Pilot seemed to have paid a high price, considering his inadequate training

Never heard of this either but I’d think top brass kept a lid on this so New owners don’t know they’re buying a write off?

It wasn't written off, it got returned to service then retired to a museum at the end of its normal life.

And here it is in its final resting place in the Newark Air Museum, you can just make out the photo of it on the ship at the right

It was in the press at the time. For instance in this piece in Flight International at the time Initial report here and a further piece here. It’s interesting that a peacetime exercise in which one Sea Harrier Force landed on a cargo ship, another crashed into the sea, as did a french fighter, and an American aircraft was damaged is described as the most-smooth running large scale NATO maritime exercise ever held😮.
