We will be in touch
Just saw this on the news, and to be honest I don't get this ..... since when was calling someone coloured considered racist? I just thought it was a descriptive word, without any negative connotations.
Am I just horrendously naive?
Don't know but I think you'll find that ALAN HANSEN is too busy counting his money to keep up with what is considered racist or not.
The negative connotation comes from the implication that a black person has been 'coloured' ie is different from the norm.
It's just one of those terms that's not used any more, wouldn't go far as to say it was racist though, just old fashioned. I wouldn't really feel comfortable using it. A bit like using handicapped instead of disabled. If people don't like it, it's not that hard to accommodate them by using something they find more acceptable.
It concerns the concept of 'othering' and also hinges on the eurocentric preposition that white is the natural order of things, so there are whites and then 'coloured' people. It's considered belittling.
what jon1973 said.
There are words that were once considered OK as descriptors of people, which are now no longer considered acceptable in that context.
Coloured is one of them.
For people of Afro-Caribbean origin, we use "black", etc.
However, if you go to sub-Saharan Africa, coloured has a very specific meaning, and can - in certain circumstances - be the most derogatory descriptor.
Frankly, language changes and the imputed meanings to words also change. I tend to take the view that certain things are probably more offensive than others, but just try my best to keep up with what's in and out and tread carefully if I don't know.
If I don't like someone, it's not because of the colour of their skin, religious beliefs or ethnic origin.
And no, none of this is PC gone mad.
the world has gone totally mad - coloured, black, whatever he said he is not a racist (and i am coloured); it dosent matter and we should all wind our necks in and get on with dealing with serious matters like famine in East Africa, child poverty etc - Things that really matter. (rant over!!!)
😐
spot on mashie.. in my short but interesting time on eart, we started off using the term 'black' but moved to 'coloured' as it was more inclusive now it seems i have to take my pallet out and find the most apropriate colour descriptor.. fwiw i understood that white was a colour.

Absolutely spot on!! People are falling over themselves to see who can be the most PC, and it really detracts from the important issues.
And yes, it IS pc gone mad.
OK, not just me thinking this is mental then.
I suppose it'd be like calling a white person whitewashed.
*don't think he mean't it in a bad way. It's not like he's done a Big Ron.
sorry you can't use the word mental, it's demeaning to those who are mentally challengedthis is mental then.
Hansen has tried, I think, to be sensitive and put his size 15 right in it.
Not a racist, never has been, press frenzy, not even a proper story. End.

I knew there was something about that TV series "the mentalist" I found offensive
I fancy the one at the front 😯
Not the first time he's missed the mark, is it?
mikey74And yes, it IS pc gone mad.
Its PC living with mental health issues 🙄

I think you'll find that's madness, gone politically correct
😀
I do kind of associate the word "coloured" with racism in the american deep south and south africa, and while not being particularly racist I think their is a racist association to it being used in everyday language.
It is the kind of language that if I used it, and someone explained that it may cause offence, I would apologise try not to use it in that way again

it is indeed a press frenzy, but until his name has been totally shamed (for NOT being racist) and the bbc gets 3 complaints, the media wont rest until hes been sacked, and the bbc will look stupid, our country will yet again look stupid, and it will make me more depressed along with just about every other man and his dog about the state of this country....
I started a rumour at work that Kings of Leon used to be Hanson.
Hold on hold on hold on; I think it best if we ask a 'coloured' person, don't you?
Ah, I'm actually light-brown coloured, so that'll be me then! 😀
Am I insulted or offended or owt?
Erm, let's have a think.....
No I'm not actually!
Ah well. That's that settled then. Excellent! 😀
(At worst, it's a bit of an outdated term, which some folk aren't too comfortable with, because of historically negative connotations of the use of the term, but that's about it. Seems that Mr Hansen may possibly be a little 'out of touch', but that is the absolute limit of it. It was not sed in a negative or derogatory manner, quite the opposite, so a non-story imo)
to me personally i find that the word black sounds like a more offensive word than the term coloured (not all 'black' men are fond of being called black as it simply generalises them as african etc), a few lads i know refer to them selves as coloured, as they are not black. it really does baffle me how a word like coloured could even be remotely classed as derogitory or offensive, or even racist?!?!
Elf - you ain't "coloured" tho are you? You is brown. "coloured" is mixed race in south africa. In south africa you would be Indian IIRC, Coloured in the US would be negro.
even this pics above stating coloured or white only.....the simple fact is they are coloured (as they are not white), guess just as it was at that time they are trying to change the way they were thought of......
i bet if those pics above said 'black only' it would now be an offensive term to say black.....
Half caste is a term I hadn't actually considered to be racist, but read this a few years back and could see the possibility to offend and haven't used since (till now).

Being brought up in an environment that was casually racist, I am quite happy to be educated about the language I innocently use which sections of society may be offended by because of past associations.
Hang on are we talking about coloured or colored here, if he was talking about those dammed yanks.....

Half-caste is definitely offensive. 'Mixed Race' became common currency after the former fell out of favour, however, these days 'Dual Heritage' is considered to be the correct term.

According to the FA, the word "black" is now racist.
Elf - we could make you an honorary white? would that help?
Am I insulted or offended or owt?Erm, let's have a think.....
No I'm not actually!
Bet you wouldn't have posted that if Gary Neville had said it. 🙂
Gary Neville is an offence to ratkind!
My friend usually describe everyone that looks oriental or of far eastern origin as Chinese as he cannot differentiate them. I bet he would be in trouble if he associate Taiwanese with mainland Chinese ... 🙄
Bloody PC gone mad ...

LOL just LOL
so basically every so often somebody (who is probably white) decides its time to change the way we describe the term for black people, the latest current term (if true) sounds about right, almost certainly in 20 years time they will be called 'white' just to be classed as completely equal to everyone else 😆
His contract must be up for review...
Easy way to oust anyone who is getting a bit long in the tooth. The TV media is littered with very well paid presenters being shoved after a faux pas.
certainly in 20 years time they will be called 'white' just to be classed as completely equal to everyone else
You're implying that even though they're black, they're not equal to everyone else? 😯

I use the term 'mongrel' to describe myself, cos hey, if it's good enough for dogs, it's good enough for me.
Did you just call me a ****?
deadlydarcy - Membercertainly in 20 years time they will be called 'white' just to be classed as completely equal to everyone else

haha just read that back and it does sound like that, but no not at all, im just saying that if we are classed as one thing then we will be all treated the same and it will be offensive to say something (anything other than one name for us all) different to anyone, regardless of colour, religion etc etc.....
in a round about way i mean that until we are physically called the same as each other, other terms/names will be used in a derogitive manner according to some people, even if they are not (ie, in no way was alan hansen being offensive or racist, yet some bright spark decides to make out he is and being a racist old man)....
the do gooders that make up such awful rules
Which rules?
Storm in a tea cup.
It's that bloody PC Brigade again...wherever they are.
Microsoft?
I'm not white though, more of a pale pinky / peach. White isn't even close to my albino mate Tom either!! No way you can classify me the same as that freak!! 😉
Hi Tom!
Just had an email comment read out live on Eddie Nestor's show on BBC Radio London. 😀
I'm bloody right, an' all. Don't care what anyone else finks. Going out now bye.
I called someone coloured at work earlier in the year, and was pulled up for it. Not by them I may add.
I asked what should I call them, and 'black' was the answer.
I'd been brought up not to refer to people as black/brown/yellow etc, but use the general term of 'coloured' to describe non-whites.
so "coloured" is out....but "ruthlessly efficent germans" and "hot tempered latin american types" is ok.
Football punditry and lazy thoughtless racism go hand in hand
My niece has just got a job at a nursery and they only have dolls which are non Caucasian (is that term allowed?) and they have to sing baa baa pink sheep.
Recently went out for dinner with a friend who has one of those jobs that no one can really explain what it is. Lots of meetings and focus groups. Anyway I was told off for using the term normal to describe someone.
Its all a bit silly. If someone has a physical abnormality its polite not to mention it. People's skin colour now seems to have fallen into the don't mention it category. If someone was to point me out at a party I would be the bald bloke over there.
Purely a descriptive term.
Not doubt if im wrong i shall be corrected.
Anyway I was told off for using the term normal to describe someone. Its all a bit silly.
So if you were a person with a disability, would you be happy to be thought of as "not normal"? Think about it.
What rubbish. Just talking to Mrs Kryton, who is black (afro carribbean) about this.
Her view is she's black, so call her black. "Coloured" isnt racist but is old fashioned and slightly derogatory as it hints at past issues Elfinsafety's pictures described. Typically though, white folk of Hansen's genre use the Term "coloured" because when they were growing up, it was the generic term they could use to avoid been silo'd into any kind of racially motivated group/seen to be siding with one.
As for "Dual Heritage" thats just PC tosh. Kryton jnr is mixed race ie half Caucasian half Afro Caribbean, no two ways about it.
I would say anyone who is the same as me and the person I was talking to is normal. Anyone else is different.
That applies to everyone the world over. Put me in Japan and I would be
the odd one out.
My friend is a 6'5" Scot who was working in North Korea. When he went out it was like the freak show was in town.
Just watching SPOTY on the telly, & Alan Hansen is sat next to a coloured* guy. 😆
*A very ORANGE looking Robbie Savage...

You do suggest they are not our equal - which shows why we should be careful with language and try our best to not be derogatory when we dont mean it- you kind of proved the point with your clumsy use of language tbh
It is just an attempt to not offend people some times it goes too far bit like sometimes people can be a bit too nice ....surely this is better than just not giving a shit?
Junkyard - Member<snip>It is just an attempt to not offend people some times it goes too far bit like sometimes people can be a bit too nice ....surely this is better than just not giving a shit?
Trouble is, quite a lot of people just can't wait to be offended these days, often on behalf of someone who couldn't give a toss.
and some people dont mind being offensive and these same people seem to get offended by those who get offended easily 😆
Like I said you can take it to far but really is it that big a deal to try and not be offensive? Do you want the right to be offensive enshrined or would you rather just be nice to people? I mean if you want to offend people I know I can do it without a racial slur or an implied one....surely you can too 😉
🙁 This place saddens me these days.
what stw or Britain...unfortunately we left the 70's behind perhaps you could to 😉
seriously everyone knows it can go too far but it is not a bad thing to try and not use derogatory or offensive words to people if you dont mean to ...really what is so bad about that?
