Looking at one of these.. Anyone used this one or similar ? eBay is chock full,of them .. Need handsfree calling(current one in car does) and ability to plug in USB for music

I had an early one several years ago and it was terrible. I've been looking again as I understand they've got a lot better but haven't settled on anything yet. The one in the link seems quite expensive, though
I had a similar quandary and in the end I spent a few days turning an old Nexus 7 tablet into a new head unit. Much more functional and fun doing it!
Yes I've seen them for £130 so maybe worth a gamble ? This one however comes with loom/Nissan plug
When you say terrible what were issues ?
Not skilled enough to do tablet conversion 😳
Cheers
My car has a Pioneer touchscreen unit put in by the previous owner and a quick search suggests there are similar branded radios with similar features available for ~£300
The one on the link looks a bit expensive for an unbranded unit, if you can get it for closer in the region of £130 that would be better making the saving worth taking a risk.
It a long while since I've messed around with car radios, but I imagine they still have standard connecters so should be plug a play or at least using a easily available adaptor. Size wise there are standards to so I think any radio that is a double DIN unit should fit in fine.
schmiken, Tablet conversion? sounds interesting, can you give details more please?
I've been kind of looking at these recently, my requirements are touch screen, reversing camera input and DAB tuner.
There's a lot of info on XDA forums about the various android based options, the newer ones with intel processors are supposed to be OK.
My main concern with them (other than reports of them overheating) is that there's a lot of stuff on there about how to fix various issues. I don't want to be spending time getting bugs out of the software.
The older ones apparently have very laggy interfaces due to low processing power.
Also, the cheaper ones suffer from poor sound quality (not sure if this would affect me as I'd be connecting to OEM amp and speakers).
In the end I've decided to opt for something like the Kenwood DDX4017DAB but haven't committed to anything yet.
note my requirements don't include sat nav, not sure if yours do? I am also looking at apple carplay / android auto compatible models but they're a bit more pricey.
Isn't a touchscreen a terrible idea in a car? You need to look at the screen to see the icon you're pressing (unlike physical buttons)?
yep not a big fan of the touchscreen in my car. Much prefer physical buttons I feel without having to take my eyes of the road.
A lot of them integrate with steering wheel controls. That said I usually put a long playlist on or wife will drive. Never really felt the need to fiddle while driving other than to adjust the volume.
That Kenwood looks decent .. Don't need sat nav 😀
If you don't want/need satnav why are you looking at touchscreen? All you get is a screen that's hard to read when the sun is out and impossible to control without taking your eyes off the road.

http://www.dabonwheels.co.uk/Kenwood_KMM-BT502DAB_DAB_Car_Radio_with__Bluetooth_.html single din (you can get dash adaptors that will give you a useful slot underneath the radio where you can stick your phone).
both of those have got DAB as well - pointless putting an FM radio in a car

I had a 2012 Nexus 7 - which I had to root and install Timurs ROM to allow OTG charging and data transfer at the same time, and to allow Deep Sleep mode on external power off.
I then used an OTG cable hardwired to the cigarette lighter via a dual phone USB charger (behind the dashboard) and plugged in a USB hub at the same time.
The tablet was then connected to a reverse camera (using Easycap app and an Rca video grabber), a DAB USB stick, a USB DAC and Bluetooth OSB2 as well. The DAC was attached to a separate amp (under the passenger seat) and then wired back into the standard speakers.
I then used the Headunit app and plugged my phone in meaning it all runs like an Android Auto head unit, but without the extra cost and added functionality.
I can add photos if required 🙂
Next job is to try buying a Vauxhall steering wheel with controls and then fitting it to allow that all to control the tablet.
Nicolai .. Yes your right that double din kenwood looks ideal 😀
I was just looking at it on halfords website .. It won't confirm whether it fits the Nissan I've to pop into shop ..
I'll visit morn
schmiken > why did you need OTG functionality?
A Nexus as stock won't charge and do data transfer through OTG. So in order to get any functionality (reverse camera, sound through a proper DAC, DAB radio, linking phone) without killing the battery in 5 minutes you have to root and install a custom ROM. I chose to use Timurs ROM which is available with a bit of digging.
I've got one in the van, only because I wanted to keep it oem.
It's grade a crap. I really wouldn't get one - a decent pioneer avic stereo will do everything better than that you just won't be able to get one to match the original car look. You'll still get steering controls and integration though, and a fascia plate will blend it in.

That wasn't really what I was asking, rather, what client devices are you connecting which require OTG in the first place? To which the answer is presumably the camera and all the rest.
We didn't really want a touch screen per se, but ended up here due to wanting a reversing camera without a separate monitor.
I like the Kenwood as it still has some buttons but most importantly has a proper rotary volume control.
Also really don't like the dot matrix style displays, always find the UI non intuitive.
