For some time now I've fancied driving a steam train and with some spare time and cash, the time looks like now. So far so good. My nearest line is £600 for the "footplate experience". Not so good. But travel a bit futher, make a weekend of it, and it can drop to £300. Still a whack of cash, but it's a real, full size steam train. A BR Standard Class 5, a workhorse of the days of steam in the '50s. Beautiful, isn't it?

BUT, there is the chance to travel futher, spend £120 more and drive (yes, actually DRIVE) Tornado possibly with less footplate time (about 2 hours).

So travel further, spend more, less time - Tornado, yay or nay?

Peppercorn Class A1, lovely engines.

Do both then at least your £600 is much fulfilled

Tornado has more street cred that's for sure.
Watch out for Tornado coming to a certain London Overground line near you. (inside info!)

Looks good. Never been interested in trains but my uncle has been a driver for decades. Driven the queen, Charles ec and most of the famous trains. Holds a few speed records as well. What was that train they spent mega bucks refitting a few years ago. Green colour. Hundreds of people gathered for a look and my son gets picked up by his great uncle to climb on board and pull the chooo chooo. My son grumbled and moaned. Really gutted for his uncle as it was something 99% would have killed for

That's because it's a computer graphic of what the real loco would look like when it's built.
This is what she really looks like:

If it were me, Tornado every time, no contest.
Now, I say that, but I could be swayed...

No it's not, it's a screenshot from Rail Simulator. Tornado would be cool, but as it's not going to be on the main line I think I'd rather have more time on the Standard 5.

It's blue at the moment isn't it? Doesn't look anywhere near as good!

He who hesitates is lost. Tornado sold out. Standard 5 not available when I am and then boiler MoT is due so it's away or a while.
Tornado website has (out of date) details on driver opportunities. So that's next year's Big Project sorted
And IMO Better In Blue
