Well it's now been 3 weeks.

After advice they've been kept somewhere warm but airy and they've almost turned all the same shade of brown, i'm so tempted to take them out and crack them open to enjoy the contents but am concerned it'll be too soon.

Should i leave them longer or will it mean they'll dry up all togther and become useless?

If i get it right then i'll be looking to get a good healthy supply to use throughout the winter, some of which i could share with friends...

I take it you all just buy them ready to eat then...

They need to be left in a dry dark airy place for a minimum of 79 days otherwise they will shrivel. Afterwhich soak them in alcohol for 24hrs then hide them along your regular trails for a nutritious snack.

Judderman Ooops! not to dark at the moment but not in direct sunlight..

Will alcohol soak through to the meat inside or do i need to crack em open, i'd of thought a more direct soaking of the nut would be better...for the record i'm on about Hazelnuts

How about........ if instead of cracking them all open only to find that they are not ready, you just crack one open ?
If you find that it's not ready, you could leave the others a little longer.

Of course that solution isn't quite so effective if you only have a couple of nuts. How many have you got ?

ernie, quite a few right now, some were picked off the floor and some were shaken from the tree so a varied bunch. no harm in just leaving them i guess somewhere dark and airy for a couple more months, will go out and harvest some more in a couple days of over the weekend and no doubt give myself the shits from eating too many blackberries, wortleberries and wild strawberries, but all so tasty at the time.

I'd have cracked them three weeks ago and enjoyed them all the more, nice and fresh.

I can see that the 'hunter gatherer instinct' is very strong in you sharki.

And yeah, keep your nuts somewhere dark and 'airy.

mountaincarrot, don't worry i did eat a fair few there and then, but as some of them are on a section of very rapid trail i didn't fancy get my own nuts crushed by some passing rider....

Hunter gather me...damn right, some of us need to not evolve to far...
