We were thinking of getting one for late summer camping in France.
Are they worth getting?

Deffo yes. Used ours on our trip to Spain in Feb/March. 4 Star sites, pitch & hook up for a 7.2metre camper 16 euro max. The handbook is very good once you get your head round the way they organise it.

Plus you can usually use it to leave at some sites instead of your passport.

They have an App now, its not much better but saves lugging the books around.
