Its a Gibson Epiphone SG for 100, 2nd hand (euros). The other one I'm looking at is a chords guitar for 150 brand new (euros again). Which one should I go for? 😕

Thanks!!

Depends on which model of SG it is, you can get them from £119 new.

Have you played either of them?

Just played a couple chords on both of them, not sure which SG it is!!! Its all red if that helps? With a red neck too.

One tone nob, one volume nob and the switch with treble adjustment.

Whichever one feels best.

Sorry if that sounds a bit glib, but guitars are like bikes. You might like the look of the nice cherry sunburst Les Paul, for example, but if you don't like the way it plays, you'll never use it.

I'll sell you an Epiphone SG in cherry red for 70quid. Usual wear and tear and couple of dents here and there. Mechanically perfect. rickbanks89 AT gmail DOT com

Ok I looked at it again and pretty sure its an SG Special, thats what it says on the head and I can't see anything else written on it.

I played a chord or two on both of them, they both feel good to me because of my inexperience i wouldn't know what good or bad feels like!

Can you get a guitarist mate to check it out?

The Epiphone "special"s are all bolt-on necks iirc. My brother had a les paul studio shaped one in glossy black (including neck and headstock) which looked nice but had rather poor machineheads and pots, and played and sounded very average indeed 😕

They are both cheap and cheap electrics are rarely inspirational. I have a squire strat and it’s a bit crap if I am honest but I only paid £50 for it. I play mostly acoustic and it does the job for the occasional craving of wanting to play like Clapton and then giving up. My half decent acoustic looks/plays/sounds amazing and that makes you want to play it.

If you must get a cheap one I would suggest a second hand Yamaha and save some budget for a guitar shop to sort it out for you with new strings etc (c£25).

Edit: like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yamaha-Pacifica-112-Extras-/300791319724?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item46088f4cac

Buy the one that you'll want to pick up the most.

I doubt it'll be the last guitar that you buy.

...if you're the sort of person who would pay a bike shop a tenner to fix a puncture, otherwise buy a set of strings (£5-£10) and change them yourself.

Hi
I'm about to sell my guitar for £130.
Westone Thunder 1
[img] [/img]
Made in Japan in the early 80s (Matsumoko factory).
Nicely built, It plays really well and has a ridiculous amount of tones (2 humbuckers with tone & vol, coil tap) and just feels like a good quality guitar. Budget classic?

Here is some more info

Would prefer pick-up from Cardiff/Cwmcarn
email is:

Cheers

Hey so I ended up not buying either, didn't have a good feel about the guys in the shop who were selling the Gibson, the guy working there didn't even know how to tune it properly (which i thought would be a basic requirement for working in a guitar shop!!).

Also the special looks like its the basic model, so wasn't as much of a bargain as i 1st thought. Would still maybe be good enough for my needs though?

Anyway still looking. I have a better idea of things now and of what I want.

And thanks for the offers of people selling but I'd really like to at least pick one up before buying, aye-aye I pass through Cardiff a few times a year but don't have any plans to be around that area for the next month or so!

Random Guitar Story

Singapore F1, Noel Gallagher playing with his band

Guy in Crowd: "You've got a lot of guitars"
NG: "More than you mate. How many do you have?"
GIC: "Two"
NG: "Two, wow. [pause] but I bet one of them's a Yamaha [pause] they're shit [pause] actually if there is anyone from Yamaha here who wants to send me some free stuff, I'd say they're great [pause] honestly though, they are shit"

Aye-aye's Westone would be a great guitar to get started on. Looks like a good example too and something a bit more original than an SG clone. I started on a Westone Concord back in the 80's. The Matumoko Westones of that era had a great reputation.

If you're looking for a cheap SG though, then check out Vintage VS6 series. Really cheap second hand and play/sound very well.

Good luck!

[i]Good[/i] cheap guitars are all over the place, and getting a bargain is tricky. Don't be afraid to buy something a bit cheap and then get it a good mender/fixer guy for a tinkering and fettle. A proper set up can make a big difference to the feel and playability.

This won't make much difference to the sound, which on cheaper electric is limited by the electronics.

PS that Westone of Aye-Aye's is ace. Wanted one myself years and years ago.

+1 wot seadog101 said.

I got a Squire Strat of fleabay for £26 as a gamble. Couldn't believe my luck as to how well it played after some new strings and a set up. Upgraded the pickups after a while. This is now my "camping" guitar. The point being, is that if you know somebody who has a feel for a good guitar then this would help you.

Would still go for Aye-aye's Westone. They're not considered collectables but they are classics and highly regarded.

So if one wanted a winter project of a guitar for acoustic material what would you recommend? Been thinking of this for a while. [Sorry to OP for hijack] It will be for my own amusement, not likely to inflict on anybody.

Oh, and what is the modern equivalent of Bert Weedon's Play-In-A-Day which I recall from 40 years ago?

So far I'm hearing Yamaha's are a good 2nd hand buy. Is that the case with all Yamaha's? Any other makes or models that are fairly hassle free? Don't want to be spending half my time trying to tune it.

If you know nothing about guitars, buying a Yamaha is probably your safest option.
I have never played a bad Yamaha instrument.

Don't want to be spending half my time trying to tune it.

All guitars go out of tune, tuning them is not difficult.
