So, I have a week off for the first time since Xmas. It's the last week of October.

The question is where should I go, just me and the Wife. Options so far seem to be Greek Islands, it will be sunny but we have to mask up for 3 hours each way on a plane and the Travel Corridor might close between now and then or go somewhere in England, put up with the weather and avoid the risks of quarantine (my wife works in a school so there is no way she can self isolate on our return). The advantage being we can take the bikes with us.

I really don't have any inspiration, for somewhere in England, so I thought I would ask for your suggestions.

Friends have flown to Greece today, looks lovely.

So long as they don't moan if asked to quarantine on return. Nothing is certain at the moment

As a teacher I am avoiding abroad while the chance of having to isolate is there. I dont think the school would be impressed. Use the flight money for nice waterproof kit and go to Scotland/Wales for some great riding in great hills.

Is it wise to be going anywhere?

Just stay home, many of us have this year, not everyone has had their mandatory week in the sun. By the end of the month you may not be able to go anywhere anyway.

Travelled to Greece (Kefalonia) and Italy (Sardinia) this month on holiday and been great with little queuing at the airport or problems while away. Been great to get away and forget issues at home.

Problem is the season in Europe is now over for both so you may struggle for accommodation or decent weather.

Yorkshire. Take your pick, it’s a big place.

Coast? All the way from Redcar down to Withernsea

Cities? Leeds, Sheffield, York and more besides

Countryside? Dales, NY Moors, Peak District (ok that’s Derbyshire but it’s still close to Sheffield)

Apparently you don't need to isolate coming back from Germany so that might be an option. Still the usual flying with masks.

In October in the UK I'd head south so Cornwall/Devon is a good shout. If you are staying in the UK have a look at a few options in different parts of the country then the week before see where the weather looks best and go there.

If you or your wife really cannot work from home if you found you needed to quarantine / self-isolate on your return, I really wouldn't risk booking anything abroad. The statistics change so quickly and take a long time to come back down, so what looks ok this week might not be in 3-4 weeks on your return.

I would agree with looking at the southern half of England for (probably) better weather and if you aren't fussy about accommodation, just look where the weather looks best a week before. But accommodation is still pretty busy in most locations because people are still trying to get a break. The south-south-west and East Anglia have low coronavirus cases outside of cities, they are your best bet for no local lockdown restrictions that could affect you. e.g. cases in last 7 days per approx 7,000 residents

Personally I would look at booking somewhere with a good cancellation policy (in case you live somewhere that might have restrictions brought in on your movements) around North Norfolk, Salisbury or Cornwall / Devon with a hot tub and covered patio and just do some pub crawls on the bike / walking.

Isle Of Wight is surprisingly near the bottom of the Covid charts.

And they would probably like it to stay that way so maybe don't go there and risk carrying it in?

Norfolk. I'm here at the moment. Great food. Loads to do, even in the rain. However, I am margaritad-up so judgement could be awry. Maybe it's actually terrrrible and I just don't care.

Cyprus has very low infection numbers but the entry requirements mean you need a negative PCR test no older than 72 hrs on arrival. If I wasn't burying my dad on the 16th I'd be going there myself on the 11th.

DIY

Seriously I can't believe with 12 000 cases a day people still think its fine to prance around the world or even the country cos well its OK if I wear a mask now and then...ffs.

Its very simple - the virus travels when you do. Not someone else. You.

Channel Islands? You are tested on entry but a nice chilled week can be had

You missed your chance for the northern riviera. It’s back in lockdown now

Err, Wales is mostly closed…

It's only the heavily populated areas of the north and south that are locked down. All the empty bit in the middle is open and great for a walking/biking holiday.

Jersey is a good choice, just be aware that the goalposts move every Thursday, so if you've been in a higher risk area for one night during the last 14 days you may have to isolate for 5 days on arrival and have two negative tests. Some UK areas are 14 days isolation on arrival.

So let’s let it stay open for the locals by not going there ?

@FunkyDunc it sounds like you want another national lockdown? Many of us still believe in a free country where we can roam as we wish, we accept the risk and get on with our lives as best we can, taking acceptable precautions.
OP is asking for holiday advice, the localism you describe is the anthesis of holidaying.

@binners I had the misfortune to go to Blackpool in October once before. Lockdown or not you couldn't pay me enough to go back.

It looks like Cornwall is the winner, hotel, spa and a visit to the Eden project with some riding fitted in as well.

Fingers crossed for some decent weather.

Nope I want to avoid it, those wanting to travel around are obviously encouraging a national lockdown by increasing the risk of spread

All you advocates of locking people out of places, have you actually asked those in the area who rely on visitors?

Just back from a week in Cornwall. Pick your spots and stay away from the obvious tourist spots (e.g. St Ives) and you’ll be a healthy distance from anyone. We did a few short sections of the SW Coast Path and saw fewer people than I do in the Peak District.

Did a big supermarket shop on the way and ate in every night, and when we stopped for a cuppa anywhere we sat outside. Don’t think we did anything more risky than had we stopped at home and gone for walks locally.

Both of you should lie in a bath of hand sanitiser for the week whilst reciting the government Covid mantra. You also need to sell your car as it is dead selfish to get in anything that has the tiniest risk of killing someone. This will fund the sanitiser.

Or you could look at wilderness cottages which have some nice isolated places. We picked up a great deal on a cancellation in the middle if nowhere. Not saying where because pitchforks

It's October and some people still aren't getting the main issue is the risk to others not yourself? ffs

As for OP travelling abroad when at least one of you can't easily self-isolate on return seems a bit of a stupid risk to take
