Afternoon STW.
In a thread on here a while back, somebody posted a story about a fighter pilot asking for his ground speed, in order to quieten down another plane in the same area trying to show off..
(this is a very very blunt/short story line, but I think its accurate!)
Does anybody know the full passage? And i think I remember it being from a book, in which case what book?
Thanks all
J

It was a Blackbird pilot
Edit: beaten to it (twice)!
Probably a 100 different versions out there....
Thanks all, super quick replies!
If i'd been able to remember the Blackbird part, I would have found it easily on google!
I think it's an extract from a book called "sled driver"
Which is mentioned in the link if I'd read it first, doh!
Jeff's link is full of spam and redirects.
Sorry. Got an adblocker so didn't see all the crap.
Amazingly, I was regaling Mstomhoward with that very story last night!
There's a similar one where a load of pilots are showing off asking to climb to ever increasing heights, topping out at around 45k feet. SR-71 pilot/radio guy comes on...
SR-71: 'Permission to move to 60,000 feet?'
ATC: 'Granted, if you think you can get that high...'
SR-71: 'Roger. Descending to 60,000 feet.'
I think it's an extract from a book called "sled driver"
The book's sadly impossible to get hold of at a reasonable price, but I've an old pdf copy if anyone wants a read...
I've uploaded the file here- should be downloadable- if there's any problems, let me know.

I've removed it for you.
I've been looking online for this book for a while (both for myself and my father in law) and have been amazed at the prices it's going for
just need to expalin to father in law how to read a book on their iPad

Print a copy?
I'd happily stick a couple of quid in the next charity box I come across if you'd be as kind to send me a copy please 🙂

You ain't kidding! Cheapest I found via abebooks is £377.20! 😯
There's another book, Skunkworks, which is fascinating, and is about a tenner, and this one:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sr-71-Blackbird-Stories-Tales-Legends/dp/0760311420/
The SR-71 is one of my fav planes
You'll have all seen the one about the low fly by at Mildenhall?
I've just spent the last twenty minutes or so hunting around the net trying to find an ePub of Sled Driver, several sites that seemed to have had copies have been served notice and shut down, but I did find a .pdf copy online, and I can mail the link to anyone interested, I don't think it would be too clever to just plonk it openly on here.
Shame it's not been made available as an ebook, there's clearly the interest, but hundreds of dollars for old print copies isn't the way to fuel that interest.
Just had a look at vinnyehs copy, and it's the same, so stick with that one, it'll be easier. I've made a copy of the URL in my Notes, so it's there if needed.
That's great, thanks Vinnyeh.
Many thanks Vinnyeh
Thanks Vinneyh 🙂
Thanks vinnyeh - been looking for that on and off for a while.
Thank you
Excellent,thank you very much.
<mod>
In light of ten thousand people being unable to read and continuing to ask for a copy of the .PDF after Vinny posted the link, I've given this thread some heavy pruning.
</mod>
Cheers Vinnyeh!
Thank you!
Thanks vinnyeh, much appreciated!
Thanks Vinneyeh!
Hmm some of those pictures in sled driver don't actually look like sr-71s. The early top down shot looks more like an A12.
Anyway, it's not about speed, it's the ratio of speed to height 😀
Mach 1 on the deck, blowing peoples windows out and generally shitting village folk up is a better brag than Mach 3 60,000 feet up.
To add to the above, thanks Vinneyeh. That's my evening sorted
Another thanks to vinnyeh from me!
What happened to my post?
Assuming it was the one I'm thinking rather than another request for the pdf, then I could have a good guess what happened to it - and you shouldn't really need to ask.
Vinney. I can't thank you enough for that. I've looked for years on eBay hoping a cheap copy would appear. Hope I can download it later
"Assuming it was the one I'm thinking rather than another request for the pdf, then I could have a good guess what happened to it - and you shouldn't really need to ask."
My post wasn't a request to steal someone else's intellectual property if that's what you're asking.
It did have the word pussy in though. Was that an issue?
Kat - and a shaven pussy.
Eric the Aviator - You actually have a bald cat? How does it survive through the winter months?
Many thanks Vinney
For those liking reading about the SR-71 you should get this book
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Skunk-Works-Personal-Memoir-Lockheed/dp/0751515035
There is also a bit in the back with some stories from SR71 pilots.
Another thank you for the Sled PDF!
Have a look for Sled driver author 'Brian Shul' on you tube too, he has a couple of filmed talks about an hour long where he tells these tales.
Inspirational guy!
Interesting read, thanks. I think what the pilot was saying was: "we flew over the fuzzy-wuzzies and thumbed our noses at them".
This came up on YouTube recommendations only the other day...
Warning - it's an hour long and, once Brian gets you hooked, you *won't* switch it off.

Read the Blackbird PDF on the train this morning. Ace. Ta very much. 🙂
Other excellent reading worth seeking out: Ignition!
