Bought a printer at the start of the year, and it's not working properly (the paper keeps jamming) took it back to PC world and they are unwilling to replace it, they want to send it back to see if it can be repaired.
This isn't any good to me as I need to use this printer daily, it could be away for up to 28 days. So in the interim will need to buy a new printer.

Which is in my mind not good enough. What are my a actual rights on this?

Less than 6 months since purchase therefore under Sale of Goods Act the fault will be deemed to be there from purchase. In this instance you are dealing with the retailer which is the right thing to do. Take note of the following:

Under the Sale of Goods Act, the retailer must either repair or replace faulty goods 'within a reasonable time but without causing significant inconvenience'.

If the seller doesn't do this, you're entitled to claim either:
• a reduction on the purchase price, or
• your money back, minus an amount for the usage you've had of the goods (called recision)

In your situation I would say 28 days is not 'within a reasonable time but without causing significant inconvenience'

Get them to test it there and then (test page), prove it works - otherwise...

Or, just buy a cheap/decent printer. I was going to suggest a Kodak, but just seen that they've stopped making them...

Honestly, I don't think you can claim 28d as unreasonable. They have the right to take it back and try to fix it (rather than immediate refund/replacement), and that's going to take a bit of time. It's not their fault you need to use it urgently.
