Now you're here, why not explain the concept behind the launch? Apart from Miketually, what kind of bloke makes up your target readership? What's the content, who's writing for you?

Don't just act all mysterious and say we don't get it.

I haven't actually met any STWers but I imagine most of them to be similar to Jeremy Clarkson in both outlook and dress sense. So don't pay them much mind. Good luck with the mag.

This made me giggle a bit though!

Honestly I joined mbuk when I was 17, and I'm now 37. I've experienced a lot of negative feedback in that time, and I always like to fight my corner, and helps my focus my thoughts. Ignorance is worth shining a light on too.

And I'm not going to explain my idea here, I've been working towards Thursday for three years, so that's when it's coming out.

I'll come back then, see what you think.

No such thing as bad publicity. There have to be some people in an STW-BETA MALE Venn overlap.

Just a small point that your site makes a lot more sense from a laptop than it did on my phone earlier.

Honestly, this is the sort of ignorance you don't get to experience in many places.

Not really, it's the same level of ignorance as you probably experience everywhere in life, just here it's more than a fleeting comment/action that you dismiss, it's committed in writing, to see, re-read, reflect and then digest. Where else to you get that?! People put more thought into composing an email to their insurance company than some of the hastily banged out reactions that make up some posts.

There are some good folk here though 😀

FWIW, as someone said above, good for going with your dreams etc, and I'm personally intrigued by what the mag will hold.

Best of luck & hope it's a success.

Another thing to remember is that criticism here isn't meant to be penetrating or analytical, it's the same standard as 'mates in the pub', and should act in exactly the same way; as a guide to what some people might think.

The crossover between your mag and STW will be much bigger than you think; this is the place where coffee snobs, knife snobs, bike snobs, shoe snobs, outdoor clothes snobs, wood burner snobs, and any other middle aged, middle class snobbery and one-upmanship types gather to be snobbish together.

...and in terms of disposable income, I'd suggest that this is the perfect place to drop anything even vaguely aspirational.

This is, or will become, your spiritual home; embrace it... 😉

In my head you were "that young lad what worked for MBUK", but I'm a year younger than you 🙂

Looking forward to hearing more on Thursday.

Ignorance? So any criticism is due to ignorance? What about people having an opinion thay might differ? As mentioned before, my indulgent moments don't involve washing my achingly hip jeans. Does that mean I'm ignorant?

Apparently so. Ho hum.

As others have said, and as my title alluded to, this place, with all the niche mongers and disposable income may just contain lots of potential readers. Best of luck with it, but one tip, don't tell your potential readers that they're ignorant when they might have a different opinion to something you wrote.

CFH..just a quick question to satisfy my naturally suspicious nature..

How did you come across this blog/magazine launch?

I wasn't saying the negative comments were ignorant in of themselves, but choosing to ignore what I was saying, not waiting to see what it actually is I'm doing, and turning on me personally, was indeed ignorant.

I didn't come across my mag launch, it's been years of work.

It's only ignorant if you don't understand the meaning of the word ignorant...

Good luck with the launch, but after 20 years in the industry I would have thought you'd have a thicker skin and an awareness that your brand awareness might come as much from initial negative reactions as positive ones. You won't have everyone like you or your style or your product. If you can't deal with that, don't look at Internet forums, or blogs, or comments etc etc.

Trouble with this free speech thing is you get to hear things you don't like.

bearnecessities' questioned was aimed at Captain Flasheart Jamie, not you. Though, as someone who sells stationery for a living (albeit to some big international players) and is un plastique when it comes to sporting matters, he's possibly not in your target market.

Fair dues to you for logging in and joining in. You shouldn't take the criticism too harshly - nor should you accuse posters of being ignorant because they might not really get your thang.

Best of luck with the launch.

Good luck with your mag launch Jamie.

The STW massive are professional argumentative niche whores who will argue about the colour of shite. Take them with a pinch of salt. Also, toughen up princess! People's opinion may differ from yours.

I hate washing my jeans, happily go 6 months between washes. I don't wear them all day and I have more than one pair. Jeans don't get smelly unless you're some sort of catweasel character.

But enough about jeans. 20 YEARS! I remember when you joined MBUK, jeez I'm old. 😥

You see cold doesn't kill bugs

no need for science here

I just can't believe people can go around with such a blinkered vision of the world.

Yes I am often flabbergasted by how not everyone agrees with me on every single issue, especially on the internet.
lets be honest some of your stuff, like my views, is not going to appeal to all.

I also agree many on STW will like your thing and this is more Fruit marketing than Brant

I think you could have said what the mag was about rather than wait till thursday for example

Good Luck though

Unfortunately I have neither a beard nor any axes so am probably not your target market but regardless, I really hope it goes well. It's always nice to see people involved in the mtb trade do well.

And FWIW, while I think the whole denim thing is pretty silly, I fully understand that others no doubt think the same about me and my interest in bikes. Love & let live, eh.

For STW-in-print from Australia (now that they've learned to be hipsters as well), check out Smith Journal.

I have to confess that, as much as I laud the prospect of someone giving their dreams a go - and the honesty that it's just another strand of consumerism - Mr Hibbard's preciousness did remind me of this:

Still, fair play. You're following your dreams, whereas I - someone of the same age - remain working for the man.

Matalan/supermarket Jean = Argos BSO

Handmade selvedge Jean = Quality handmade frame

Both will get the job done, just depends on how much you value craftsmanship, quality of materials, knowing your purchase wasn't made in a sweatshop etc.

And obviously in both cases there is a whole world of choice inbetween.

Good luck with the launch Jamie. 🙂

To be fair to Jamie, it's actually a really good idea for a magazine - and he appears to have a strong commercial awareness.

A magazine with a focus on expensive products (which could have healthy marketing budgets), written for affluent male geeks who prefer to think of themselves as conoisseurs.

Of course it'll be very, very easy to take the piss out of it (a la Rapha), so he may need to develop a thicker skin - as suggested by others above.

But I'll also say good luck and don't underestimate the importance of this website as a source of potential readers - and get used to seeing this thread on page 1 of the Google results for your mag!

Bloody funny this..

Man writes blog, blog gets taken the piss out of by STW crowd, content ripped to bits, man fights back in "Awe C'mon Lads.." shokka.

You've been in this industry for donkeys years and now, and on STW you find time to comment on what we think about your blog? You sought US out to find out what WE think?
How did you do that Sonny? You’ve either been here before or our Temple of STW reaches the parts other Forums don’t reach.
C'mon, whadddddya expect ? Really? We will argue the toss about anything, really anything, but in essence it’s Banter, good old fashioned Banter and bloody funny Banter at that.
Secular and ignorant in thought, maybe, but there are more folks on here far more diverse and intelligent than they care to type out..

I’d like to wish you BoL with your Blog/Mag, but don’t be surprised at critics vehement comments, it’s what the Internet was made for.

I’ve never read MBUK BTW,
🙄

I sent Jamie the link on Twitter.

I suspect there's a circular reference, as I'm pretty sure CaptainFlashHeart stalks a few people from here on Twitter. I'd guess that he saw the link there so started this thread, then I saw this thread so posted it to Twitter.

Actually, it's even more circular than that:

This forum exists because the magazine was crowdfunded online. I contributed to that because there was no magazine around at the time that covered MTB riding as I understood it.

Bloody hell JH is37 years old? I now feel positively ancient!

And I'm not going to explain my idea here, I've been working towards Thursday for three years, so that's when it's coming out.

Good luck with the new venture....... if you get tired of sniffing coke off models breasts you can always design a niche bike. 😉

Elsewhere on STW: a two page thread on slippers

😀 Therein lies a part of my point! STW contains many people who really are connoisseurs of almost anything. They might even curate their slipper collection in an artisan shoe cupboard made with wood that just simply wasn't the right colour for their woodburner. 😀

And yes, Mike, I did spot it on the Twit via someone from the bike industry that I follow. Thought it was an amusingly STW type of thing, hence posting.

FWIW, the 'not washing jeans' diversion was marvelously funny!

Mike, see section 4 of The Manifesto.

THOU SHALT NEVER, EVER, WEAR PANTALOONS DE NIMES. When you have progressed beyond fondling girls in the back seats of cinemas, you can stop wearing jeans. Wear fabrics appropriate to your age, and, who knows, you might even get a quick fumble in your box at the opera.

From another niche magazine for chaps. 😉

Honestly, this is the sort of ignorance you don't get to experience in many places.
as I was alluding to in my bearded men in sheds building bike frames post, we all justify things to ourselves by various means. I cannot justify spending what I do on bikes to none cycling mates, to some STWers I could, other STWers would still reckon I spend too much and a few may scoff at my cheap ass ride. I can't justify to myself spending £200 on a pair of jeans and there's no chance the wris****ch elite on here could justify £2k time pieces to me.

We're all different, I'm don't think placing different values on jeans/bikes/axes/beards makes anyone ignorant and a bit of pisstaking seems fair, how many cyclists have had "you could buy a car for that"? we don't (shouldn't) get all stroppy about it and laundry "indulgence" seemed ripe for mocking. Beardy Mcaxerson was funny, but cockmonkey crossed the line.

I thought the dad thing was alright, I don't own an axe (or have a need for chopped wood) and the other stuff just doesn't appeal to me, like I said I doubt I'm your target audience.

Well since it's now live and we're allowed to know what it's about

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jamiehibbard/eta-male-a-lifestyle-mag-for-the-21st-century-gent?ref=discovery

Reading through the blurb, IF it managed to avoid the pretentious, 'method living' (Great phrase that 🙂 ) pitfall, it could actually be an interesting read.

Anyway, as I've said above, I hope Jamie has success with it even if I can't see myself buying into it (Jeans for £200! You could buy a stem for that! 🙂 )
