What would you buy? I guess 3 section ones are shorter when closed so more maneuvorable(?) but heavier and more expensive.

depends how high you want to go and what your needs are in terms of transport or storage. 3 section combination ladders are very adaptable - working both as convetional ladders and and an extending frees standing step ladder.
