Totally a 1st world problem I know, but anyway....
We had 2 cars in the household, let's call them 'car-a' (mine) and 'car-b' (my wifes). Each had a private number plate, let's call them 'plate-a' and 'plate-b'. Neither car is an Octavia.
Mrs CDB has complicated life as usual by trading in car 'b' for car 'c'. Before the sale, we moved 'plate-b' off into retention, costing £80. 'car-c' has a bog-standard DVLA plate which we'll call 'plate-c'.
So that means we now have:
'car-a' with 'plate-a'.
'car-c' with 'plate-c'
'plate-b' in retention
All good so far, and we really should now just be moving 'plate-b' to 'car-c'.
Except there's a complication. For 'various reasons', we're now going to swap cars. I will take 'car-c', wife will take 'car-a'. We'll do the full keeper registration change of course, to keep everything straight, and insurance. And we'll want to move the respective private plates over too.
But is there a way to swap 'plate-a', currently on 'car-a' (if you've been following at home), onto 'car-c' without incurring a further £80, that would then allow us to put 'plate-c' on 'car-a' without further cost and without waiting for the DVLA to process by post?
If I'm reading it right, I'll need a V5 for both with their non-private numbers on, and at the moment I only have that for 'car-c'.

+1. If you’re named drivers on each car, why worry? <br /><br />When our son was born, we swapped use of cars as mine was a 5 door and my wife’s had 3. Made sense for putting the car seat in and mine had a bigger boot for the pram & other baby gear. Never bothered changing name etc.
You can transfer from carA to carC without transferring to retention first, so in theory, you can save £80, but it's still going to cost you £80(ish) to do the direct transfer, but not £160 to go carA>retention>carC.
I suspect the OPs private plates are their initials & so they don't want the "wrong" plates on the "wrong" car, registration papers don't really matter?
Don't think Daffys idea works cost wise as doesn't cost £80 to put from retention onto car.
Thanks all. Yes, we're going to change the registered keepers but mostly because the insurance policy I'll have, allowing my youngest child to drive the car as a learner, mandates this. Otherwise I agree as above, there'd be little point.
Dickyboy has the idea; my private plate isn't a big deal, Mrs CDB is totally sentimental about hers. Its basically the dog's name in a slightly mangled way.
So....what car is the dog driving?

Dog's don't live that long, so will the 'new' dog also have the same name or will you change its name to better suit the plate?
