I'm probably late to the party in this one, but have just watched it on iPlayer.
Bit shit, isn't it.
How did that convoy make it all that way through no man's land unharmed?
Which river in northern France is a raging torrent with a massive waterfall?
Plus many other inconsistencies......
I thought it was a good film, I enjoyed it.
But the again I can watch a film for what it is without getting hung up on how real it has been made to be. Plot holes have to be pretty bad for me to actually care.
I am of the opinion that if I want a documentary about something I'll read a book or watch a documentary.
I seem to remember it started well and then went downhill pretty fast till it reached its nadir with the whole girl/german/ baby storyline. Not sure Cumberbatch was the right casting either.
I guess it was better than Dunkirk though.
Saw it at the cinema with my son when it came out . We thought it was good. The emotion when the German pilot crashed was properly felt.
Also enjoyed Dunkirk at the cinema. Another brilliant scene was when they were trapped in the boat.
Films are so much better at the cinema, you just get so much more involved in the story - just been watching Frankenstein on Netflix and wished I’d gone to see that on the big screen.
I almost walked out on Dunkirk departure setting it at the cinema in a big sofa.
I seen it at the cinema and it was fabulous, seen it since and still very good. Yes there’s some little stretches of reality, only new about Northern France no having a large waterfall until afterwards. Didn’t make any difference as it’s not a real story.
Yeah, worst documentary ever.
Oh, wait.
Not sure about the waterfalls, but this is an interesting read ..

Technically impressive Roger Deakins cinematography but I didn't find it particularly engaging.
Also feature films like this are not meant to be documentaries and are bound to throw up historical inaccuracies - it's just someone's version of history - fictionalised even if based on real events for entertainment purposes.
I filed under the same genre as The Matrix.
Fundamentally a bit shit, hiding behind a party piece. Spent the whole film thinking ooh look how its all one shot.
Crossing no mans land and coming through the tunnels was a bit stressful but other than that... Dull.
I think the best bit of dunkirk was the first five minutes.
If you want a documentary style war film you want CharlieMopic
I'd happily watch both films again and again.
Mendez and Nolan are master craftsmen and each of their films are wonderful expression of art for mass markets...... or not !!
In an age where screen content is dumbed down so that two screens can be watched simultaneously, I guess projects like these may not be seen again.
I think that 's a shame.
1917
The premise is frankly ridiculous in my opinion (regardless of what Mendes says). It takes no account of the class system of the time. The very idea of a senior officer CONVERSING with a junior NCO, let alone sending him and his mate on a serious mission when the hoi polloi worked in factories, down the pits or were in service is a nonsense. He would have sent one of his subalterns fresh out of public school, with Baldrick to carry his valise and sword.
I found both Dunkirk and 1917 to be twaddle that needed to be turned off. I think the film industry realized some years ago that there is a large enough audience for bilge, and indeed some people enjoy entirely switching their brains off. However there are plenty of good war films if you can be bothered to make an effort.
Apolos if wrong, but the two posters above sound as if they have quite an interest/knowledge of the historical details.
I barely know one end of a bayonet from he other.
My enjoyment is of the story telling and aesthetics ... as for waterfalls !?! .... artistic license init.
I'm all for ..... "A story better told"

Fundamentally a bit shit,
I think we may have to step outside!
I didn't rate it.
Not as bad as the most recent remake of All Quiet on the Western Front.
Now The Bombardment, that's a gripping film.
However there are plenty of good war films if you can be bothered to make an effort.
Could you list a few, please?
I enjoy war films and the closer to truth/reality the better.
Not sure Cumberbatch was the right casting either.
I guess it was better than Dunkirk though.
I avoid anything with Cumberbatch in it.
I think Dunkirk would have been much better if it was just shot and edited with a conventional linear storyline.
Re Great War films - Come and See
Available on YT, a great date night flick
Available on YT, a great date night flick
Have started it. It's bloody hard going.
1917 wasn't the best film ever, but it's hardly Plan 9 From Outer Space bad enough to warrant a thread. There are many many more crap films available.
Could you list a few, please?

Das Boot
All Quiet on the Western Front
Come and See is an upsetting but compelling watch.
Sisu, anyone???

Well, I watched "Come and See"
Quite remarkable and viciserol. Hard viewing, but if you make it. Outstanding film.
Really gets in you head.
Must watch.
FWIW I thought 1917 was great, if you’re worried about misplaced waterfalls and such like, you might want to avoid Jaws - great film, but the shark looks a bit shit, deffo avoid back to the future, it’s about a time travelling car, Prof Brian cox says this can’t happen (although, he also said it’s a great film despite that). There’s a load of films about a school for wizards, my kids love these, but again, I think they’re factually incorrect.
I found out on Saturday that the final scene in titanic, where leonardo dickydido drowns - the night sky is actually of the Caribbean in April, apparently Neil Degrass Tyson mentioned this to James Cameron, so in the director’s cut version they changed it to the correct sky - true story!
Thanks for the come and see tip - it’s on my list now, I’ll let you know what I think!
There are many many more crap films available.
Exactly. Anything with Robin Williams or Tom Hanks is automatically worse.
leonardo dickydido
Jack Dawson was a real person on the titanic and i have seen his grave.
I imagine he didn't see some posh knorks in the lead up to his death.
Anything with Robin Williams or Tom Hanks is automatically worse.
Nonsense.
Philadelphia
Dead Poets Society
Saving Private Ryan

A few years ago we were discussing Titanic when someone’s (20 year old) daughter piped up with ‘is it a true story?’ I said no, the whole love story is just an invention. She went ‘ no, I mean the whole iceberg thing’
🤨

I always thought the scenes of vietnam in Forest Gump were probably pretty accurate. Sending the vulnerable down tunnels, boredom, and the broken men that came home to be treated like shit.
Good morning Vietnam for the sound track aswell.

Where do you draw your line then? If a teleport machine had been magicked into existence in 1917 and they'd saved themselves that way, is that ok with you? Saving Private Ryan with a helpful horde of orcs? Maximus checking the time on his digital watch?

Absolutely – the list of good films either of those actors has been in is pretty long (yes, they have been in some crap too, but pretty much every actor has).

It certainly stays with you for a while. Now read Ordinary Men by Christopher Browning
