I did this previously in an organisation I worked for - as did most of the management team. It did actually make a difference as we "learnt" a bit more about each others traits, preferences, styles. There were a few job transfers and role changes as a result and things did work better for a while.
You can argue that it's all woo-woo, that the more observant might have gleaned this kind of stuff through other means, or that other methods would have worked too/better but I did see some benefits, particularly in how my manager dealt with me (and I him).
As I said above though, I don't believe it's fixed forever and we'll have traits in our assigned type and the other types to a greater or lesser extent.

As others have said, it's all made up (Myers Briggs especially) with little scientific backing, but then as an INTP I would say that.
Madame laughed so much at my profile I insited she do it too and then she didn't laugh quite so heartily. Now I know why I never got jobs where the selection process included one of those tests back in the 80s. I'm a protagonist apparently and Madame a consul.
Madame didn't watch me do it, but I watched her and was only surprised by/disagreed with one reply she made - but made no comment as I didn't want to influence.

Similar questions are asked if you ever do any mental health counselling or therapy. They ask the same questions every week to check on progress.

Sure, but my results were so far off it'd be useless for any of that. And even if other people are getting good results, the fact that it can be so wrong means you can't really trust it in general.
I asked the interviewer (FTSE 100 company) why I had to do one when they're notionally bollocks, and got told that they (the interviewers) don't actually get to see the results until after they've made a decision and that it was more of a curiosity thing than anything else.
Where I work ~25% of us fall into the "serious personality problems" profile of INTJ compared to about 2% of the general population. Which I thought was interesting. Anyway, they gave me a job so denigrating their recruitment techniques in the interview didn't cause too much damage.

Their use is, at best, as a placebo to hang the real change onto, which is people realising change is needed and making an effort.
If as many people were as "intuitive, analysing and thinking" as the woo tells them, that would be rather obvious to them.

Don't go to much o. The results of these test. The results and depend a fair amount o. Your mood at time of taking. Also if you get transfix with the idea that I an X and X do / don't do Y then you can become the definition or stop yourself experiening / trying things because you have the analysis in your mind

Take it a few times, average it out. The questions in the full tests are designed to try and do that within the scope of a sitting, but of course come back on a different day and you may vary a little. If you vary lots then either you don't know yourself very well or you're telling porkies for one reason or another.

when the analysis has a flaw then there is a problem and it can't work for everyone! Do they offer a money back guarantee for the "self improvement" sell.
I wouldn't say it's a load of bollocks, it just has one of my characteristics completely wrong, no matter how many times I do the test, it still rates me that way because the test cannot return the correct analysis. It's result is somewhat correct but with a major flaw.
Maybe they need a 17th personality?
Reading through the other personality types they all have something I relate to that isn't quite included in my own, so yeah maybe it has got more to do with horoscopes, clairvoyants and lazy people management.
Exactly, it is a trick, it feeds you questions to self describe yourself, no suprise that you then think the outcome is an accurate description of you. The only suprise is that people still fall for it.
And then combines it with an overly flattering description, which engages people's confirmation bias.
Try reading some of the other personality types, see how many you "connect" with.

I remember doing this in work, pre my ASD diagnosis.
we had a business something or other person in doing them to try to streamline something or other...in the business.
He was up against it with some. those headstrong opinionated types, who came out of the test just as that, were the ones who said it was rubbish, which proved the point.
me, well, he got stuck on the 'how do you feel about that' questions, when my response was either, give me more context or , I don't feel anything either way (as I've not got enough information to formulate an idea of what an appropriate response should be)
I think he left worried that I was a psychopath. I'm not, I'm just an android.
I did a Myers-Briggs 4 years ago and it came out as ESTJ but some were mild characteristics and other components were very strong. I guess if I'd have done it 10yrs ago the results would have been different as I would think and behave differently at work.
Where this is of value is a thing called "the grip". The essence of this theory is that when people are really stressed they behave in the opposite way to their profile. So an extrovert will become introverted etc. I used this at work when one of my guys was really struggling on a project and it helped me identify that he needed more support. It doesn't work for everyone though

A better test would be to real all 16 descriptions without knowing your type then try and identify it from those.

As an exercise I did the same test in German and came out as an assertive entrepreneur. The questions were worded slightly differently and seemed to be focused more on work (not surprising given the questions were written for Germans), but the analysis is not far off that for a virtuoso.
I must've been doing something right given I'm self employed and work with my hands. It also confirmed a few things I knew already which might help the GF understand how ****ing lucky she is to be with me.

She's been with me long enough that not much shocks her.
At a previous employer, we had a HR droid who pushed these on us (I think she'd been on a course and got a certificate or something).
I wrote a script to fill in answers randomly (I rolled it a few times to make sure it didn't just spit out a DGAF profile).
In the follow up meeting, there was much gushing about how I fit the profile *SO* well, and all the characteristics were such a perfect fit.

There are not 16 personality types.
These sort of tools may be useful to aid discussions but there is a reason they are not used for anything more in selection.
In first year psychology the lecturers would often get students to complete one of these surveys and give print out of the results. Students would be asked to rate how accurate their personality type or profile was and typically it would average around 80% to 90% agreement.
Of course, all of the personality profiles printouts that the students received were prepared, all were exactly the same and not based on the students' actual responses.
There are not 16 personality types.
