What mid-layer are you guys wearing on the hills when it’s REALLY cold?
Baselayer, legs and top.
Two thin fleeces from the pile.
Waterproof trousers and jacket.
Buff around neck, wooly hat, under gloves and big over gloves.
Goggles.
Puffy jacket and foam seat mat for if we stop.
Walking uphill I'm usually just in baselayer under waterproof, a cold day add a thin fleece.
Walking flat or downhill I add second fleece.
I'm good down to mucho below zero windchill.
Emergencies - we've old KISU and mylar sleeping bag, and I often have small gas stove. Experience says I'm good with that paired up with someone for 4 hours, even in -10 air plus windchill on the top of Ben Lawers....
Thanks, I think I've just not been out much in that kind of windchill for a few years and have forgotten how cold it can be. Mind you it was -15C with windchill on the Carnedds last Jan and we were fine all day.
Maybe the lesson is that even at 450m it can be as cold as the Munro tops Doh!
similar to NBinTheF, Rab Meco 165 hoodie merino base + Macpac Pulsar (primaloft one/gold) tend to be my go to. Sometimes I put on an extra base and use the Rab meco as hooded mid. (the pulsar packs small in it's own pocket so I tend to pack it all year for an emergency / sandwich stops)
Have we done the new SMC Munros book?
Got one the other day and it's very nice. Some amazing pics and as well as doing the normal routes like the old guide it outlines bigger days taking those hills in. Good lockdown reading I reckon.
Dogs fine, partners no!
I'm only 2hrs from Blencathra, so not a bad drive, sundays suit fine.
Have we done the new SMC Munros book?
No, and we're not doing it either, as I got the previous edition about a month before!
Ooh Blencathra sounds like a plan....are you familiar with Mungrisdale Common? ha!
Halls Fell Ridge is nice if Sharp Edge is in normal conditions (slippier than a greasy weasel)
are you familiar with Mungrisdale Common? ha
Looks spectacular!
Halls Fell Ridge is nice if Sharp Edge is in normal conditions (slippier than a greasy weasel)
Loos like we have ourselves a leader! Nice one @ElShalimo!!
Halls Fell Ridge is nice if Sharp Edge is in normal conditions (slippier than a greasy weasel)
I think Hall's Fell is nicer in many ways, nice direct line finishing right on the summit. Sharp Edge is pleasant enough in the dry but it's more about the reputation than the quality of the route really.
Weekend forecast is ~0C with 25mph winds here so time to play with layers again.
MWIS looks pretty grim here- -5 on tops, 25-40mph and 'whiteout' mentioned...

Looking east from the summit of Ben Rinnes towards Corryhabbie Hill and Glen Fiddich - taken on Monday. Awesome conditions, little wind. Speaking to some ski-tourers who had just come down Corryhabbie said conditions were so good, they came back the next day to go up again.
We've had approaching another 18" of snow this week already and now have an amber warnings until Saturday. The farmers are having a job keeping the roads open as we've got drifts up to 6ft across the roads and 40mph+ winds.
👍
I was hoping to get out for a ski tour tomorrow but I'm not sure I'll be able to get anywhere and more crucially, get back.
I have a pair of Peter Storm waterproof over trousers that were bought for me by work. Had to use them for the first time the other day and couldn't get them over my boots(despite side zippers) which isn't ideal. I also find them a bit flappy.
Any thoughts on the Berghaus Deluge Hydroshell over trousers? See that they can be had for around £35 and actually come in different leg lengths, side opening looks better on them too.
Cheers.
They're the 'dracs ipad' of the reasonably priced waterproof over trouser world. I swear by mine.
Cheers, have ordered some.
We've 3 pairs in our house.
They work. They fit ok. You don't cry when you rip them. They are properly waterproof and the venting works. Ace.
We've two pairs of the posher Berghaus Paclite - better cut, more breathable, lighter. Twice the price and don't last as long.
Marmot Precip pants can usually be found for not much £s and they're pretty good
I had a full zip pair for years. They're in the attic now, more duct tape than waterproof due to crampon or ice axe interface
🤦
From the BBC:
The Met Office has extended alerts for snow and ice across the eastern length of Britain until Wednesday.
Up to 20-30cm (8-12in) of snow is expected in high areas of Scotland.
You lucky, lucky people
😭😭😭😭
I don't suppose Cheshire is due that much?!

From yesterday morning - driving up to 6 ft deep across the road outside the house. The local roads are kept clear by the farmers with snowploughs fitted to their tractors. Spent an hour helping to dig out the snowplough - he bounced-off the deep drift onto the soft verge and there was so much compacted snow underneath, his wheels were just spinning. The roads have blown in again overnight but not as much snow.
Drifts of 20ft+ reported up towards the Cairngorms.
40-50mph winds today - hopefully the drifting in car parks and verges will be enough to dissuade anyone from parking and venturing up into the hills.
@dovebiker – where are you? That looks pretty wild.
Glenrinnes, between Glenlivet and Dufftown. Horrible, sleety snow right now with strong winds.
Proper winter today, close to home adventure that was really quite adventurous.
🤘
BBC4 now

Another fine day - Blairdenon in the Ochills was more like Cairngorm with -20c with windchill.
Quite hard going as we kept breaking (painfully) through icy crust, sinking knee and thigh deep for a few km.
Col du Sherrifmuir ski area was open too - about 30 out skiing that we could see.

Stunning. So glad I'm in Cheshire 😔
👍
Col du Sherrifmuir ski area was open too – about 30 out skiing that we could see.
This ski area?
Oh yes. 😎😎😎
You lot are however trumped by the Scandinavian chap we met coming down off the tops at 8am. With artic pulk/sled, on ski's after spending the night on the top of Blairdenon...
I think I might have met him a few days ago, or someone else doing the same thing. Kinda struggling to see the attraction, although did briefly think about overnighting in the snowhole we dug up there.
I agree - he said the wind was wild last night. No sh*t Sherlock - the forecast overnight on tops was 60mph, -10 air. And he was camping at the highest point, with not a jot of shelter. Odd....
If I didn't have a girlfriend, I'd genuinely have moved up there by now!
Insane winds on Beinn Dearg today. Struggling to stand at 300m, sacked it obviously!
Did anyone else clock this? Firstly the massive avalanche in an unusual location and then the diver. Bizarre!

What wetsuit for Munro's?
That's really odd.
Apparently filming for a TV program.
Not sure if this has been done but Montane have updated the classic Featherlite smock design. Best bit of kit I've had in the last 20yrs. It looks like they've also revamped the Litespeed

Ridiculously calm day up Ben Challum today.

Winter back for a few days.
Stunning
Heading up Central Couloir on Sgorr Ruadh today. We'd optimistically thought that a climb might be possible but nothing was in acceptable condition so we went for a wander instead.
👍
A last few local peaks to do now. Mrs_oab had her second jab today, so we took things easy and wandered through the woods above Strathyre.
This is the little climbed ridge of Meall nan Oigreag, Sgaith a Chaise, Creag a Mhadaidh and Meall Mor between Strathyre and Glen Ample. We are sunburnt, had almost totally calm conditions on the summit, and snow falling most of the way down!
Looking North West - Ben More and Stob Binean are the snowy two in foreground, beyond is up towards Glen Lochy, Glen Lyon and even edge of Rannoch.
Looking North East down Glen Ample - Loch Earn with Ben Lawers, Bheinn Ghlas and Meall Corranich in centre, Tarmachan to left, snowy one in far distance hard left is (I think) Meall Bhuide in Glen Lyon
South East to Beinn Each. We were up there in full on winter conditions a few short weeks ago.
South West of course is Ben Ledi
Still keeping it local, took a bimble up Meikle Conval to look back down the glen towards Ben Rinnes and had to belt back down to avoid the squally hail/snow showers

I think we're in your photos, OABs. We did the traverse taking in Benvane, Stuc Dhudh and Ben Ledi, descending back down Glen Stank.
Some lovely photos
@matt_outandabout did the Ben Vorlich, Stuc a'Chroin, Beinn Each traverse a week ago, so we've been trotting around the local hills a fair bit.
A few from the last couple of days. Klibreck, Hope, Foinaven, Creagan Meall Horn and some general views.

Ooo, nice.
Sweet mother!!! Excellent.
I'd post a picture from my trip to Llandegla today, but:
1. I didn't take any
2. It'd likely have been a picture filled with an overweight scouser on an eBike.
North Buttress on the Buchaille twice in the last 4 days! Stunning route, better than Curved ridge for those with a bit of experience. Weather perfect both days. Very happy to have travel rules eased early.
Stunning!
I forgot last week's.

Have not been able to do our usual winter season hiking trips so early morning trip up Scafell with Bert (double coated) before it warmed up.

It is years since I have been up there. It is an ace view....
It is years since I have been up there. It is an ace view….
Yeah - beautiful day today. 4:30am start though to get there early before it started warming up. We're both snoozing on the sofa now!
Stephen Pern ("Hooks") has just released his new film, it's called "Time on Legs"
Ah nice one @nostrils......that's tomorrow's home alone evening sorted then!!!
We took our motorhome up to Coniston Sunday-this morning.....hiked Walna scar road-Down Crag-Brim Fell?-Swirl How-Wetherlam then back into Coniston for a pint of Old Peculiar....it's up there with our best ever days out. Sore legs as it was the first 'big day' in about 6 months.....the view from Wetherlam was possibly the best Lakeland view I've had so far....360 panorama from a fell that I'd not heard of!
Up to 48 Wainwrights now, not trying to rush through them really, still got a 2 more of the Coniston fells to do, so will have taken 3 trips all in to tick them.....why have 1 good day when you can have 3 eh?! Pics are all on my gf's phone, will try and nab some although I'm off all social media these days.
Howdy, had a couple of months sans STW, was spending too much time on here, but this thread has pulled me back from sanity and the real world. 🙂
First wee visit to my favourite island at the weekend, with Mrs Nobeer and the Nobeerette, was gonna bin it early on as the weather was grim, but the gloom lifted soon after.

A few good days in the hills in the last couple of weeks, getting snowed off Lawers, a beautiful day on the 3 Beinns on Arran, and a wee midweek double of Ben Lui and Beinn a Chleibh on Wednesday. Magic.
MRT training walk in the Galloways tomorrow, should be a good day.
What y'aw been up to?
Excellent stuff! I ticked Wainwrights 49 and 50 a few weeks back, stayed at Brotherswater in the Motorhome.....awesome walk somewhat marred by our dog getting attacked by an out of control labrador with a couple of fell runners.....I thought that up on the tops of less popular peaks in the Lakes we'd be basically safe from dickhead dog owners....apparently not!
My mate got bitten by a border collie on satura crag, coming off the Knott, he's a right dog lover as well, it's me that generally canny be arsed wi them. 😂
Another couple of Munros ticked off yesterday, cheeky wee night in the van at Achaladair (by Loch Tulla) then Beiin Achaladair and Beinn a' Chreachain. Roasting, Clegs, Midges, but views to die for, as ever the phone cam doesn't do it justice.
Mrs didn't enjoy the walk out along the River Tulla doubletrack, I wouldn't be surprised if she's still muttering about it now!.

I keep forgetting to post on this thread 🤦
Q: can anyone recommend a 25-28L day sack for a tallish person with a decent hip belt? I'm 6ft 1.5in and most day sacks are quite short. Ideally something narrow and slim
Some from Eabhal last month

My day sack is a wee bit bigger than that at 36l, Osprey Stratos. I could get away with smaller most of the time, but at 36l it's big enough for nights away, to swallow tent, sleeping bag etc. I'd like one a bit lighter too, but light means no hip pockets, pole loops etc, and I prefer all that stuff to a few hundred grammes saved.
Lowe alpine bags look really good these days, plenty options.
If ye decide on an Osprey, gimme a shout, I've a couple of 40% vouchers left.
Braw, never been to Uist.
@nobeerinthefridge - thanks, I'd like to take to up on that offer. I used to have a v1 Talon 33 (2009ish) and used it for many years until it fell apart
We had 2 stunning days on Uist that week. It was amazing
I'll check make sure it works first (valid til end of July) and PM you it mate.
Thanks !!
