Heading over to the White Peak again in a bit....not even looked at the weather forecast yet! Really missing the Lakes and Snowdonia now

Rewinding the conversation a bit to info sources - I find Walkhighlands a bit cluttered now and taking longer to search. Steven Fallon's website is what i tend to default to now, particularly as he also lists longer days with walking and running estimated times.

Posted this on another thread but thought I'd add more pic's here.
We headed south for a wee family hill walk up Meall a’Bhuachaille on Saturday, been meaning to do it for ages. Superb views!

ALPKIT are doing black friday deals on a lot of their stuff (if not all). I've just bought their 20L rucksack for £40.

Right, hopefully these photos work....

Beinn Eighe in October...
Torridon was amazing, and luckily got a good day up Beinn Eighe. Couple of days later we went up Slioch and couldn't see a thing.

Schiehallion few weeks ago.

Glenshee last weekend.

We're pretty lucky to be living in Perth and Kinross council area, got great access to some beautiful places and a good selection of hills.

Not really a munro bagger, been walking for years at home and abroad, but started my attempt on the munros this year. Really enjoying it as it kind of forcing us to get out and not waste our weekends.

Great pics, Torriden is a very special place for me. As a Luddite ex-punky couch potato teen in the late 80s (Yorkshire), Coffee table book pics of Liathach in winter was my inspiration to become a winter walker, climber, alpine mountaineer. Did horns and Liathach in winter a few times over the years, but our only Beinn Eighe venture was tent got destroyed and some kit blown away in a storm in the corries. I remember Andy's new Karrimat disappeared up the mountain followed shortly by our trangia stove cartwheeling into the waters, we beat a hasty retreat after retrieving the stove and tent, karrimat (and Beinn Eighe) never to be seen again. Great days.

One absolute positive of 2020 is the amount of folks taking to the local hills. This is south Ayrshires only Corbett, Shalloch on Minnoch, and last winter there wasn't a path.

Cold day up there yesterday, but still a lovely walk.

Despite a late start, managed to get up Meall Corranaich and Meall a Choire Leith on Saturday. Was a lovely day above the fog anyway. Was lucky enough to get my first brocken spectre!!!

My local TK Maxx is selling some Montane bits and pieces cheap, just picked up 2 Octane gridded fleeces for £10 each. Might be worth a look if you have a store near you (I know it varies wildly between stores).

I was once again reminded that even local 'piddly little' hills are lovely this weekend.

Welcome to Cromlet hill, all 406m of it. A lovely 14km walk in and out.

(Perthshire Ben Vorlich and Stuc a'Chroin the obvious two in the background)

Aye, if there's one thing this year has taught us, there's treasures on our doorsteps for sure!. I came across this site a while back, which has been pretty good as my missus loves a trig point!.

We had a rather awesome day on Coniston Old Man today.....we've rarely ventured out to the Western Lakes, we'll definitely be back!

Given that it was a Monday, Icey and lots of folk can't travel due to Tier 3 regulations, there were a fair few people out.....lovely relaxed atmosphere up there though.

@stever - that's fab! We were up there in late Jan in similar conditions but not quite as sunny

which route did you take?

Oh there was plenty of walking 🙂
East ridge of Pen Yr Ole Wen, Carnedd Dafydd, Llewelyn, back down the broad ridge of Craig Llugwy (new to me, lovely at the top). In the mist from just before the first top to about 700m on the way down but navigation wasn't too bad. I did meet one guy in shorts ...just after I'd stopped to layer up! Lucky day off.

We did the same route up to Llewellyn then dropped off via Craig yr Ysfa then down the reservoir address track and back along the road. The last hour was tiring after a long day out.

Fantastic day out

Great pics above. I've a few extra days to take leave before the hooligans break for school hols and fancy getting to the hills. Probably Brecon, Cadair Idris or Snowdonia. Assuming conditions stay snowy/icy I'll be needing some crampons (experienced but not so much in winter conditions). Can anyone recommend any that would work with Meindle Bhutan's or do you have to have boots with a recess on the front?

Kathoola KTS walking crampons.....although I'm fairly sure that I've read people have used Grivel newmatics with Buhtans?

I might be tempted to sell my KTS's actually....used twice....I've got proper B3 boots now though so can use a 'proper' crampon.

Microspikes are another option but definitely a halfway house - you wouldn't want them on bullet hard off camber slopes.

@ElShalimo - your descent is a better option I think. I was ready to get off the hill and wanted to look at that descent, bottom stretch hard work.

@pedlad - this is helpful page:

https://www.needlesports.com/Information/Need-Advice/BootCrampon-Compatibilty

I reckon your boots could take a C1 but whatever you get, please make sure you know how to use them, and fit them in a hurry, before you go up in the snow & ice.

Thanks for the link, makes more sense now.
If we go it will be with a mate who's an ML and experienced winter mountaineer so he'll be able to supervise things :->
@Tom-b do you want to PM me what you'd want for them?

I don't think that I can start PM 'chains' as a free member! I'd be after £75.....let me just check whether or not I can get them to fit my girlfriends boots.

Actually that's a point....I think that there's two different sizes them. These are the M/L, maybe check up on what size you'd need?

Kathoola KTS walking crampons

These will work on pretty much any boot, I use them on running shoes.

They will be absolutely fine for any walking in the UK mountains and a country mile better / safer than microspikes for many applications.

Oh and put them on BEFORE you need them (voice of experience here, balancing precariously on hacked out ledge).

Bit of a rite of passage that. I'd like to say it's something you only do once but in my case I'd be lying.
