Hi all,
I'm heading out tomorrow (short notice, I know!) with the family for a short break to our usual spot near Grange in Borrowdale and I'm trying to plan a couple of rides for me and my lad.
Rides done so far are:
Bash and Whinlatter (many times!),
Langstraff - Styhead - Seathwaite (my fav descent),
Honister - Wharnescale - Sail/Rigg Beck (disappointing TBH, bit of a slog)
Back of Skiddaw.
Trying to think of something new in the area, preferably about 4-5 hours and don't mind a bit of cheek.
What am I missing?
Ullock pike and laps of barrow until tired
Whiteless pike and back via grizedale pike (fig 8)
The ULTIMATE BASH (ie continue up past watenedlath and do a few of the southwest passes then return via cat bells (super cheeky) and barrow (superb)
Four passes from honister (do wharnscale then turn right back up the valley in a big loop that gives you styhead at the end)
Bit further out but birkside from Helvellyn keeps you on the right side of the range.
The rest is all a bit niche.
Just done the four passes route Saturday just gone, where I read about it,it said 4hrs ish and it took me and a mate 6 1/2.Was good though if don't mind carrying bike up 3 of the 4 big climbs.Speaking to some lads on four passes they did skiddaw from Keswick,at the top dropped down left on a steep scree slope then went right on a bit of a ridge gradually dropping you into woods at braithwaite lake. They said that was great,I've walked up the way they went down and remember thinking it would be awesome on a bike.
Braithwaite, coledale, coledale Haus, whiteless pike, round the back of rannerdale Knotts, sail beck,
then either
Rigg beck, back to braithwaite
Or
Up to the saddle between sail and scarcroft craggs, descend into top of stoneycroft Gill, onto the top of barrow (not barrow door), back to braithwaite
The four passes is a strange one for me. I will do it one day but see it as more of a challenge to complete and tick off the list rather than a ride to savour and enjoy (plus don't think it's doable for us in under 5hrs!).
Was looking at a video just last week of the Barrow descent and it looked fab - might fit it into an evening quickie.
El_bouf - that looks good but can't see the (saddle) return to Braithwaite on the map?
Thanks everyone keep em coming!
Whinlater north loop , back over south loop , up Grizedale , and over to Crag hill ..Sail and finish with Rigg Beck 🙂
Best of both wolds ,trail centre fun ..big mountain feels ... and finish with subline singletrack.
Elbouf ‘saddle’ is https://osmaps.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/osmaps/54.57314725466895,-3.2324357456803057,12/pin
Then descend NE towards Outerside then onto Barrow
That OS link doesn't work for me, try this

Ah thanks, got it.👍

Crazy talk. Its bloody amazing. I did two of the passes from Eskdale today. Black Sail is just heavenly

Agree with this though. Big day.
And +1s for GRisedaleP, Whiteless, Ullock, Birkside and Barrow 🙂
Blencathra is also good, but not as good as the above.

Four passes isn't as bad as making out. I did it solo in Jan this year with about a foot of snow underfoot and had to walk some of it due to sheet verglas and came in in about 4h30 inc an hour stop for lunch and that was a week after a shit bout of covid. It is a bit bleak though on a cold day and there is a lot of hike a bike.
