XTR outer cables?

[Closed] XTR outer cables?

I'm just about to click the pay button for some XTR M970 shifters, but I need to get the outer cables too.
The shifters they are replacing are SLX (the rest of the groupset is XT) I assume that I don't want to use the outers that are on the SLX shifters?
The other thing that left me a bit confused was talk about using full length outers that are sealed?
I ride a giant anthem, its not possible to run a full length outer cable..
Can anyone share some advise please?

When I have bought shifters for the shop they come with cables and outers as well. However these come from Madision, I don't know what CRC do as I do not buy of them.

all shimano outer is the same diameter and will be fine.

XTR outer is called SP41 and a lot of places fit this as standard anyway as it comes on a big roll and it's the best stuff they do.

Your old outers will be fine but replacing the outer, if old, will always help.

If you want to replace it then just measure how much you need and buy some. I have a load left over from a bike I just built (I buy it by the roll when building a couple of bikes, especially if they need full length outer). You will need some decent steel wire cable cutters.

If you take all you old outers to your bike shop they will cut it to the lengths you need for you. Failing that I keep meaning to sell the remainder of a roll I have here.

Cheers andy..
This SP41 http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=71510

This leads me on to another question..where do i get the end caps, or do they come with the SP41 or the shifters?

For top end equipment, it sure is a PITA to get all the bits you need.

All the bits are in the kit I linked (end caps and more importantly the bits that stop crap getting in), works out cheaper than getting everything separate, no harm in having a couple of spare inners.

Your original outer should be fine, unless it's damaged anyway. The XTR kit is great though, works really well and isn't expensive

(only downside of the kit is that the cables come stupidly pre-cut into short lengths, so if you have a bike with full outers or long cable runs, they're no good. Really unneccesary and irritating. But for most bikes with split outers it's perfect)

I ordered 4 metres of SP41 from CRC.
It arrived in 4 x 1 metre lengths.

I'm guessing you needed more than a meter length?..
I'm in a predicament now as what was £125 for xtr shifters is now over £150..
Medline on the other hand list them with full cable set , with 10% off up to midnight...£135
The question is what's included in a full cable set?

just re-use your old outers for now.

or: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=67788 and sell the ptfe inners.

basically you need some outer, some of these for good sealing: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=29462

and some of the normal ends: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=70245 for where the cable goes into the shifters and the rear derailleur.

You use the tongue and shield ones for the cable interrupts on the frame including the front derailleur.

Actually a better idea if you have interupted outers is buy some SP41 outer and this kit for £3: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/transfil-gear-cable-waterproof-kit/

That will provide you with all the ferrules. Most shops sell sp41 outer for £3.99 a metre
