A strange set of circumstances mean I'm looking at a bike with DI2 XTR 2x11.
I've no interest in x2 so thinking of stripping it down to 1x11, however, It kind of misses the cool stuff like sequential shifting. And will add a touch more weight over mechanical.

Anyone with 1x11 Di2 ?

I'm a life long gripshift fan so this will be a total change for me whatever I decide to do.

yup! Been running 1x11 Di2 since the start of Jan this year on my Dune with a 50 tooth extender

It's brilliant! The "Mech saver" system really works too, as i bashed the mech against a massive bit of an Alp over the summer in LesArcs and the system released an reset perfectly without causing any damage. I'm fairly sure that the impact would have at least bent a normal cable operated system that doesn't release when hit

I did a pretty stealth install, with the battery hidden in the fork steerer tube as well 😆

Very curious about how you did the install - any more pics?

Is it just one cable running from shifter to mech, other than the battery?

On a 1 x system, it seems pointless.

You need junction boxes.

i'm with hobnob, never used 1x option but don't see the point either, 2x system all the way for me.

"bare" battery was wrapped in adhesive doublesided foam tape and stuffed up fork steerer, wire comes up past star nut. 5mm spacer on top of stem (under top cap) had slot machined for wire exit, which pops out and straight into display unit that sits on bars right next to stem. Single wire across bars, held in place with clear helitape on underside of bars) to single shifter on RHS. Second wire comes out back of display (display acts as system junction box) and down into frame in normal manner (dune is internally routed) and passes under BB, into chain stay, pops out at the back and plugs into mech. I couldn't find a long enough single wire to do that run in one, so i chopped the plug of two wires and joined them (with proper automotive spec sealed hot glue crimp splices)

It's super neat because the only connections required are done by the display, meaning everything else is just a single wire run!

I am totally converted to 1X but if someone gave me a 2X Di2 bike I would be giving it a go before I changed anything.

TBH, my Dune was my "oh sod the cost" bike. I'm not getting any younger, and wanted a "max capable" trail bike whilst i can still make use of it! 😉 (i know a proper DH bike is too much for me lol)
So, i threw pretty much everything at it, not cheap, but it's a pretty amazing bike, terrible value for money, but like i say, "sod it, you only live once".......

Pro do some very nice di2 bars and stem to hide the cabling.

They do, but not that wide and not with the new large stem clamp diameter that makes modern wide bars nice and stiff.....

Ok, screw it. Order placed for a new bike.
I have the money and health to make use of the thing, so merry bloody Christmas to me.

Bars are 800mm wide, and given that the stem clamps to a 28.6mm steerer, I have doubts that increasing bar clamp diameter makes any beneficial difference.

I would say it definitely does have an effect (bigger bar diameter).

maxtorque - what cassette is the expander on and how easy was it to fit or do you just take the smallest sprocket off? Seems madness they cost as much as a cassette for one ring though.

nevermind, got it here: http://int.oneupcomponents.com/products/50t-shark-sprocket-18t-1x11

Comes with a cage to make it fit but still seems expensive when a chainring is £20-30.

Extender is not a direct fit to XTR di2 mech because as you get it from shimano, with the OneUp extended cage the upper jockey wheel fouls the latching spring for the mech release (on Di2, there is a "release when hit hard" system, that unlatches the 'lecy motor from the mech when you wallop it hard, which acts as a mech saver (and it really does work!)). In order to get around this, you need to move the spring mount to a different hole, find a correspondingly longer spring, and dremel a small amount of the parallelogram linkage off your XTR mech!

When you've done all that, you've got a wide range, oneby, 'lecy shifted, 11spd, thing of beauty 😆

andyl - it'all have an effect for sure, but as I say - not sure it's beneficial.
