Hi,

As title. Thinking of riding it tomorrow, with a visiting mate. Anyone know what condition it's in?

Cheers for any help.

It'll be boggy and awful. Riding will make it worse. Best leave until summer.

It'll be rubbish. May as well go bog snorkeling.

Cut gate at this time of year is only worth it if it's so cold as to be frozen otherwise it has some significant boggy sections which are not much fun.

As said the long flat middle section up high holds a lot of water. Bog central...

An out and back from langsett is usually ok year round though. It'll still have some softer sections but mostly rideable.

Last weekend the lower Derwent trails I rode were surprisingly dry so something else in the area worth considering

Cheers all. Figured it might be boggy considering how the terrain is. Only ridden it in dry summer weather. We'll do something else.

Cheers.

@jonnyrockymountain...that's interesting to read. So not boggy at all and good for a ride you say?

I wouldn't ride it if it's boggy in the summer either. We've had a wet summer. It's hugely eroded. there are so many other better trails to be ridden this time of year that don't have such a negative impact on the surface. Try out some of the recently repaired trails rather Ladybower or maybe the loop from Edale over the Hayfield and back? They are rocky, less exposed to the weather and wheels are less destructive.

Get out and ride the lovely trails, that's what it's all about rough/rocky/technical/mud/roots, that's mtb fun!!!!
If you don't like it get a road bike!!

Agree to a point in general... but it's a sensitive area up there and hugely susceptible to trail erosion when ridden when wet. So for the sake of the future of the trail it's worth avoiding when very wet.

that's what it's all about rough/rocky/technical/mud/roots,

The top of Cut gate is a boggy mess when wet so it's well worth folk checking conditions.

As much as I agree, you haven't ridden it have you. It is getting destroyed at the top with the traffic avoiding the bog, did it a few weeks ago and theres one section that has gotten ridiculously wide compared to a few years ago.

It needs some serious love like some flagstone paths being put down to preserve the area.

The rest of cut gate is fine though for all year use though due to how rocky it is.

1) cut gate in wet conditions is no fun at all.

2) choosing to avoid certain trails when conditions dictate is something we all need to get used to, if we want land managers to take our concerns over access seriously...

Larry
Ridden it many times pal, I'm sorry my views are different from yours, but also really enjoyed walking up there this afternoon with my 9 yr old son (inset day) and his 70 year old grandad. As we all enjoy the wonderful countryside we have on our door step, walking, cycling, running. But a bit of poor weather/conditions doesn't stop me, like I said sorry about my views

Erm well of course otherwise how would we know to tell you not to ride it.

It's not a route I ride regularly despite living down the road from. Just forewarning that it's bad and that riding it now wouldn't be that much fun and can cause more damage. Because of my ride I won't be riding it again till mid next year.

Hello folks,

Chris from PDMTB here. With Ride Sheffield We're having some interesting and potentially very fruitful discussions with those who have the power to improve things up there about doing just that. But it's early days.

One of the biggest things they have all asked is that we exercise a level of responsibility in choosing when to ride up there. It is fragile. It is way worse than I've ever seen it at the mo. It's also currently caning it down. I can hear it on my roof.

We as mountain bikers are getting the finger pointed at us but we have an opportunity to redress that - but only with the help of the riding community. We're proving time and time again now that we can be a responsible group and it is paying off. Keep tuned to PDMTB, Ride Sheffield and KoftheP to see how things are changing - but also; help. As Esther says, there's tonnes of other places to ride, including the stuff around Ladybower which has been worked on just this week.

And read this. It says a bit more.

Agree with all that. I only ride it when dry....only ridden it 3 times (I am local)

Lots of hypocrisy though, hey. ๐Ÿ™‚

You want a national park to be maintained by people who have no regard for authority and to be managed by people who want to sell everything to the highest bidder.

Yeah we're all thinking that's a good idea.

Because of my ride I won't be riding it again till mid next year.

Just wait for it to freeze, which it does frequently, when it's brilliant and mostly sandpaper-style grippy. Also immense at night under snow...

ps: what are the implications of National Parks funding cuts for rights of way maintenance? Given the relatively low use of tracks like Cut Gate for most of the year, you'd think they'd be relatively low priority compared with more popular ones.

Trail maintenance in the future:

Leading inevitably to...

Why can they not build a large boardwalk to bridge that top bog area, it would retain the flow of the trail, plus allowing the moorland peat bogs find there own natural repair/way.
Tend to agree with last post, the folk on community service could be put to work building it, paying back whilst learning skills.

Yes, when is PDMTB going to start lobbying for chaingangs to be pressed into service up on the moors? It sounds like a highly practical solution, though I guess the chains may make the walk-ins a little slow. Serious question though, do we still have chaingangs in the UK? It does seem like the most obvious way to go.

I think what Pook says is PDMTB are working on improving the bridleway, not that they are getting people doing community service to do the work.

Speaking of volunteers, the bridleways coming up from Hope and Gores/Lockerbrook descent are 100 times better thanks to PDMTB and Bike Garage's efforts over the last couple of weeks. Got to the bottom dry for the first time I can remember. Will be taking some days annual leave to come help at the next ones. They are good fun and so satisfying seeing the positive results of your own handiwork.

But oddly no one ever notices till representatives start becoming a PITA and sticking an oar in at council meetings.

Interesting....

What you say is correct and as it should be, responsibility is in our gift, but it's taken a few years for you to see the light!!

As I remember you taking up to and including 80 odd people up Winstone Lee Tor in winter on one of your pootles, despite numerous people on here (who all avoid that hill for the whole of the winter) advising you otherwise and being ignored.

Pot calling the kettle black?

Ever such a slight over exaggeration there Rik, eh?

You'll notice that it's about 4 years since there's been a pootle as they were unsustainable and more since there was a pootle on WLT.

And WLT has always had a distinct, robust line. You just need to know where it is.

Phil, do I read into your comment that you regard PDMTB and Ride Sheffield as 'pain in the arses' who are 'sticking their oar' in?
