Right I'm currently running an XTR M985 race double chainset 30/42 (well 28/42 now cause I swapped out the inner ring)

I have XTR shifters the ones where you can swap the LH shifter between triple and double.

If I girl out and swap to an XTR Trail chainset 26/38, will my current front mech and shifters still work? Obviously the chainlines are different on the Trail versions which is just a triple without big ring.

It's on a Scale 29er so 30/42 with 11-36 is rediculous and I need to give my knees a break!

Yes it will, did the same on my Tallboy. 28/36 was just a wee bit too hard when loaded on long races.

Hmmm, I was tempted to change to a double on my HT 29er. But now I'm thinking that I'll just stick to the old-faitful triple as I mostly do long distance XC stuff.

Ok have done my research chainline is only 2mm different so no dramas.
Main reason for wanting to go to the Trail chainset is I intend to run a single 36T for xc racing and think the Trail will give a better chainline well 2mm better.

I run a 36t single on the Race double cranks and it's fine. The bigger issue is getting 88mm BCD chain rings. I got a custom ti one made.

Nick, agree compatibilty would be better with a Trail version , for ease of getting rings. You've probably got the same as me then, as I use a Homebrewed inner ring. Just the Alu one though.
If it's the same how long did your Ti one take to arrive?

Do you run in the inner or outer ring position? Assuming outer for chainsaty clearance with a 36T. Again from an aesthics point of view the trail would look neater running a Single as it already has the blanks for the big ring.

Finally are you using a chain device? Been looking at the E13 XCX ST but wondering if I could do without.

My HT has a single 36 on it and one of those newfangled xtr mechs with the clutch spring works really well. Cannot remember where the ring came from.

I got a ti ring made by Mathias Hellore, took about 3 weeks, but I think it depends on his workload. Was v good value though, and shows no signs of wearing out.

I run it on the outer position - you're right about the blanks, KCNC do bolts you can use as blanking plugs if you fancy.

I use a Superstar guide with a bodged seat tube mount, refused to pay the obscene amount for the MRP or E13 seat tune guides! Wouldn't be without one though, definitely want something!
