hi guys i was wondering if you can help i am looking into shifter for my xt set up but don't want the gear preview windows.

do the shifters come with everything you need to remove the windows or do you need to buy extra bits.

failing that is there an atlernative shifter that would do the job

Can only speak for XT but the windows just come off, I would imagine the rest would as well.

yif you buy them from 08 onwards there is a blanking plate under the shifter window when you take it off.

as in the plate is slid into a recess on the window, you remove it and screw it on.

+1 Allmountain - XT has a blanking plate you screw on where the window normaly sits ๐Ÿ™‚

XTR doesn't as it doesn't come with a blanking plate as it with an indicator in the first place.

Deore doesn't have the blanking plate. In the 2011 Shimano support manual both XT and SLX are described as "removable optical display" where as Deore just says "optical display". You can take it off but it will be home brew blanking job.

Deore doesn't come with the blanking plate. SLX & XT do.

To clarify -

Deore = no plates
SLX = has blanking plates
XT = has blanking plates
XTR = no indicators so no plates

To throw a spanner in the works I've just removed the windows on my slx shifters to match them with some hope brakes and..... No blanking plates.
