Anybody use an oval chainring with a xt 12sp drivetrain?, just fitted one, was going to be for when run SS , but thought I would try it geared. Was running perfect with round chainring, but now chain tries to come off chainring in 46t and flies off in 51t , oval is 32t btw. Any adjustment or stick to round chainring when geared.

Is the chainring the correct off-set, as in does it match the off-set of the one you took off?

Im currently using an oval on mine, had a few shifting issues when first installed, i just couldn't get it dialed in, measured my chain and it was nearly at the point of needing replacing so i just swapped the chain out and everything has been fine since.

Never had any issues with the chain jumping off the chainring though.

Assume you have the correct boost offset if needed etc, and you have the checked the chain length?

The 12 speeds seem to be very finnicky over chain length and wear and getting it spot on for ultimate shifting.

How worn is the chain?

Id be checking the chain wear to see if it needs replacing, did you check its still the correct length?

I have one running fine on a 12s drivetrain with an XT mech and shifter, but the chain and cassette are Sram.

I do remember something about chainrings and Shimano 12s chains not all being compatable (Absolute Black stick in my mind as not compatable), something about the quick link having a strange profile. Is your oval ring marked as Shimano chain compatable?

Edit: looks like I was too slow typing that up and you've eliminated that...

Mine is fine (32spd absolute black). Can't think it would be chain tension in the 51t. Is it happening with both clutch on and off? Is the quicklink done up properly?

Chain fairly new over and just checked no where near worn, it is a kmc though, but never had an issue with round chainring, tried with clutch on/off , might try the original xt chain(only changed to kmc for gold blingyness)

I'm running a 28T Absolute Black direct mount oval with a 12s Shimano chain, but SRAM 11s cassette (so only 10-42). Absolutely trouble free.

My Unite oval chainring works perfectly with my shimano 12 speed chain also. Not tried other chains on it. B tension is key but equally I think oval will make an insignificant difference to it through the rotation.

Interesting that the kmc chain is a problem. I have a sram mech but I think where the matchy matchy is important is chain to cassette.

Going to give a good few rides, with the drab xt chain, then try the kmc again, might be the new unites teef need to bed in, although I wouldv’e thought the finiky Xt chain would be the problem chain.

thanks for all replys👍🏼
