Looking for some new SPD shoes that are stiff enough to race in and also use on road but that are durable enough for a few scrapes here and there, and aren't going to fall apart after a season.

Any recommendations?

Shimano S-phyre for me. Very comfy, super stiff sole and no sign of any wear after a season of cx.

S-Works here. Very comfy, and wearing well. Have been ridden on gnarmac, road, XC, trail centres and even a day at BPW when I'd forgotten my flats!

Giro Privateer have worked well for me for racing and general use inc SDW length rides. I use them for my gravel bike too.

Specialized Comp MTB, stiff, comfy (like a pair of slippers!) and I get a couple of years out of a set (covering 2000miles)

Specialized Comp here. I had some of the Sport which were great shoes but the sole was just glued onto the hull and it just broke up and fell off within 2 years. I still have otherwise perfectly functional shoes but they look like road shoes underneath!

Whichever Gaerne ones you can afford, use their shoes on road and off never had any problems

It's early days, but after half a dozen rides the latest Shimano XC7 Wides do the narrow heel, broad forefoot thing better than anything else I've had.

I bought the xc7. Really liked them and fitted well but I found the strap across the top of the foot was too high and dug into my ankle so sent them back.

Giro Terraduro here. Possibly not the raciest shoe ever, but stiff and have a really nice "roll" to the outsole so they're really comfy to walk in. Perforated uppers rather than acres of mesh, so they're semi-weather resistant too.

Another vote for s-works, silly stiff but mega comfy. (IIRC, been 8 months since I wore mine 😫)

That's exactly what I have. Lasted me 10 years. Would like something I can put the power down on a bit more. Quite like the look of the giro technolace which are on offer at the moment.

Like the terraduro but pretty weighty.

Have S-Works and Bontrager RXL Carbon. The Bontragers are notably "clumpier", the S-Works feel lighter, but I get more heel slip with them, and they're quite a lot narrower, particularly in the toe box.
