I've read conflicting points of view on whether this is a good idea. I'm confident it'll work, after all if the 12 speed is slightly narrower then it'll function. The question really is whether it's a good idea, or will it just wear quickly as it's not really a complete system.

I'd be concerned about chain retention due to the excess inner chain width.

The irony there is that I like the look of the new chainring specifically for even better chain retention. Good point though. I think I'll stick with something designed for 11 speed then. May as well try an oval one.
