Hi folks,
For a few years there's been horror stories about £230 cassettes being trashed and XD drivers also being lost because they can't be separated.
So now I want to remove my current cassette off a wheel with a Hope 142x12 setup, which was appropriately treated prior to installation and the driver was clean and greased properly as I'd read about difficulties (though the cassette was fully greased itself by the looks of it out of the box.
Thankfully I haven't broken any splines yet as when the tool slipped on the first few attempts i realized it was actually only engaging 1-2mm (if that)
So I have a long (deep) Icetoolz removal which I bought previously to resolve this problem on another wheel but it is being blocked I think by the Hope end cap which widens a millimetre or so behind the splines. So while the tool is deep enough it still doesn't fit over the end cap.
There's threads I've found on this issue, but so far not found one that actually confirms a tool that can fit over the end cap.
I've also seen some stuff about removing the end cap through the xx1 cassette but enough posts seem to confirm that can't be done as it doesn't fit through.
Any suggestions for a tool that definitely works in this situation?
The end cap should fit through the hole, assuming it is the correct one.
I have a Kinesis rear wheel which was fine as a 135 q/r set up, but is near impossible as a 142x12 because the end cap has a nut which gets in the way, and I have yet to find a cassette tool that will get a good purchase on it. I have a road Hope rear hub that is the same.
Poor design. Somehow you have to get pressure on what little purchase you can get to keep the ruddy thing in place.
Or source a much slimmer cassette tool. Go to the LBS and ask. Take biscuits!
qr skewer through the axle to hold the tool in place ?
You just take the end cap off.
Xd drivers should come with slightly smaller OD end caps for the freehub side so you can fit them after. You can fit the QR one before fitting the freehub in most cases. My drivers were used and came without the end caps (didn't realise I needed them) so the option was either turn them down myself on a neighbours lathe or order the specific ones. Tweeks was the only place I saw doing them online but any Hope dealer should be able to order them.
What is that black spacer for in the photo above? Worried I have something else missing now!
Sorry about that, just got the first image of an XD driver with endcaps that popped up; it is a conversion kit for a non-Evo Pro 2, which requires both the axle and that spacer.
ahh phew!
As above. Pull of the end cap with some pliers and all should work fine. We have a few set up like this and have no problems removing or fitting it once the end cap is off. Im supprised how many bike technitions aren't aware of this.
And yes indeed the cap came off this morning. Seemed to be stuck but with some persuasion came out.
There was a separate thread in May about the caps not pulling through.
So all good. Easy job once the cap was off. Cleaned up and reinstalled.
Did a few things at reinstall similar to the install 1.5 Years ago. Lubed up the tube mechanism especially at the front. Got loads of mucky oil out just by getting it all loose and rotating really freely again dropping oil through. Once all rotsting really nice again greased the other bits and pieces incl tube thread, driver thread and every other contact point and job done.
Thanks for the replies.

Anti-seize on the threads and torque to 30Nm, not 40Nm, and use a decent tool (Which you have) and it'll be fine.
It's heavy handed gibbons and no grease that causes it 🙂
