What state are the trails like at the moment, not been there this year yet.

Also, a cycling buddie mentioned there had been some objections to cyclist using certain parts a while back?

Riding in the forest is not recommended/endorsed by the local forestry commission in the main forest, yet I've never been stopped by anyone for doing it (just stay off the footpath up by the visitors centre marked "no cycling" and stay out of the SSSi's).
Was damp when we went on Saturday, more slimey than muddy, but it's been raining a lot since then.

Officially, cycling is only allowed on the (poorly signposted) bridleways, Sustrans Route 45 and the family cycle routes.
Unofficially, both the Forestry Commision and Natural England seem to tolerate cyclists riding in other areas, or at least accept that there is not much they can do about it. Having met with both of them recently, it's people making new trails that they object to, not that I'm aware of any new trails being made recently.

Like most outdoor public attractions, most people never stray far from the car park or waymarked trails.
If you go off in the remoter areas exploring, you're unlikely to meet anyone on foot to complain.
