Wrong item sent and fitted WWSTD

Ordered some Gusset S2 - 50mm rise, 31.8 clamp, 800mm wide

Came, fitted them and something seemed odd, so measured them - 780mm and considerably smaller than my Gusset S2 MJ 800 bars on another bike.

Checked order - 800mm

Checked packaging - 800mm

Scanned barcode on the bit of cardboard (doesn't state width) that comes attached and it seemed to take me to ads for 780 bars on Google.

Contacted supplier explaining the situation and so far been offered a 10% discount on a set of £55 bars.

Manning up and just riding them isn't an option, so shush.

Saving a fiver, then having the hassle of selling them on at a loss probably is just a PITA (they'd probably just end up in the shed).

Will see how it plays out - not kicking off yet, just curious where people think I stand on this and what they would do.

Contacted supplier explaining the situation

Sometimes its best to keep things simple.

"You've sent the wrong thing".

I'd suggest ringing the supplier and simply stating the above...

Chop 1cm off either end of the bars on your other bike.

Hi, you've sent the wrong item, can you tell me how to get the correct one? Thanks.

You've sent the wrong thing, but I cut the packaging off, fitted it causing micro scratches and can't return it in an as new condition?

Why can't you send them back? I doubt there'd be any marks from the controls if they were carefully installed (EDIT: Just seen your above reply... good God this "new" forum is slow! In that case just punt them on as fitted but never used and take the hit).

I was actually sent the wrong grips recently. Ordered some PNW Loam XL in Blackout Black and received the Recycled version, so black grips with silver clamps. The PNW label said Blackout Black but the shops own label said Recycled. Couldn't be arsed sending them back at my own cost so just chucked them on the bike. The silver clamps bothered me though so I ordered the Blackout Black versions from elsewhere and will give the silver ones to a mate who has a silver bike next time I see him, or chuck them on eBay if he doesn't want them.

Hi, you've sent the wrong item, I have fitted them as the packaging as well as the order confirmation labelled them as 800mm. This is not the case, they're 780mm.

Can you tell me how return these to get the correctly sized replacement.

Thanks.

Well, that's pretty much what's happened - and so far I've been offered a 10% discount as per my OP

According to the CAB from Googling you're still entitled to a full refund/exchange as the goods are 'faulty'due to the incorrect sizing/packaging.

If they won't replace, you could get some lock on grips that lock only in the inside...fit them with a cm either side not on the bar. The lock on grips should be solid enough (may provide a bit of flex and add comfort).

Change your grips.

No, the phrase is 'get a grip'. 😆

I don't mean that, btw - which retailer?

🤣 I'll maybe name and shame if they don't follow up satisfactorily - they've gone quiet

I did the same with a Hunt wheel, ordered the E-Enduro Wide, received the Enduro Wide, didn't realise, fitted and rode. Hunt however were epic and immediately sent me the correct wheel as a replacement and just asked me to return the other. I didn't do that in the end as I bought it instead at the price they would sell it as a used wheel, so I have another spare! Not a huge amount of help but demonstrates what should happen!

I think as the packaging said 800mm then they owe you new bars. But maybe you pay return postage

You probably won’t get them swapped for a wider pair… I can see it being a manufacturer labelling confusion thing. They’re unlikely to be making two versions of the same bar, with same sweep, rise and clamp diam with a 20mm difference in width… because… saws. Gusset probably labelled it 800mm, then realised it was 780mm, and it’s a running correction on the specs. Not really the shops fault, and as it’s used, you can see why they’d resist a return. But you’re in your rights to a refund… if you push it.

I’d ask for some grips that move the hand position out 10mm each end. Might cost them £20, but cheaper for them than either a full refund, or posting two bars around.

”Send me the right bars”, will get you nowhere I suspect, as the bars are what they are… just labelled/advertised incorrectly.

Your reply wasn't even there when I replied to r_m's reply earlier 🤣

I could just move them on, but it's more principle at this stage - I may just suck it up. Got my eye on a set of Title AH1's instead

This. Every day of the week.

Not really the shops fault

But it is their problem to fix. OP ordered X and got y.

780mm is only 2.5% less than 800mm so you you're quids in there 🙂

If they sent you the wrong thing they sent you the wrong thing - you're not seeking to return them because you changed your mind - they cocked up - either mis-describing the item for sale, or dispatching the wrong thing, or holding stock that is mislabelled (I had fun with Planet X sending me the wrong size frame once and repeated replacements all being the wrong too as their frames were in mislabelled boxes.

Would a 10% discount be a solution if they sent you a pair of size 9 shoes in box marked size 10?
