anyone done it?
not sure how to keep it neat around the shifters
and do you wrap the cable to the top of the bars?

Electrical tape. And I normally wrap the cables all the way up...

Yes - you just need to sneak the cable out between the wrap after running it along the flat part of the bar, like this:
