[Closed] Would you trust a 11 yr old carbon frame?

I have a dilemma, been offered a Giant MCM Team for 450, now with Rebas, hope discs, xt middleburn cranks etc. Now forgetting the high spec of the bits, just consider the frame! I have been told that the frame has not sustained any major crashes and has had very limited riding over last 5 years.

This bike was over £3k when new, and thats 11 yrs ago! it has a good rep for being very strong.

Should I go for it, I would like to get it and put the bits on a new frame, but I only have about £500 to spend, so not an option!

It is a retro classic, just concerned about the frame.

Are you asking the same question again or are you somebody else asking the same question for the first time about the same bike?

I'd still add up the value of the bits attached to the frame and if the frame is 'free' I'd buy it. I wouldn't 'pay' for a 11 year old frame, carbon or otherwise.

The bits are worth it and as you say, the frame is a classic. What it boils down to is, if you are worried about it snapping now, will you actually enjoy riding it, or will it always be at the back of your mind? If you find that's the case, sell the frame and put the parts on something you would be confident on. Either way, you won't lose out. Also, if you are a whippet or clydesdale and how /where you ride are big factors.

I've had at least 4 pairs of carbon forks and after a while have sold them on as I just can't bring myself to trust them completely, even though I know in my heart of hearts that they are very unlikely to fail.

Quite ridiculous really 🙄

I wouldn't worry about it snapping personally. I just don't think it has much, if any, value (partly because other people will worry about it snapping).

I had a Greg lemond TVT carbon (the origional bonded to alloy lugs) frame that was 19yrs old. It was still fantastic even though superseeded by the new ones.
Sold it on the bay to a retro collector.....
