[Closed] Would you buy a used MTB with a knackered front derailleur?

I'm about to sell "Sir Walter" the Scott Reflex 2.0. The Shimano Deore front mech has snapped, making it impossible to select the top chainring, so should I:

1. Advertise it with a knackered front derailleur and hope someone buys it anyway?
2. Sort out the problem - if so, is it an easy/cheap job to sort?
3. Go for the dodgy option and just say it's 'well loved'?

Won't be asking for too many beans for the bike, obviously.

It wouldnt bother me if the price was right. I'd probably spend a while servicing it anyway 🙂

if it's in decent nick, sort it, easy job.

If not, advertise honestly.

Don't be dishonest

Dear God! Even I could sort a nackered front mech out for about £15.

Better to do that, than the daft 'it has got 27 gears, honest, its just that you can only use 9 at the moment' routine. Which will have most people looking at you with that head-tilted, sympathetic look they reserve for people who are really really 'special'

😉

easy job.

[Incompetent mechanic alert]

How easy is easy?

I'm put off not by the job itself but by the fact that Deores aren't all the same and mine doesn't seem to have any labelling telling you exactly which one it is...

* feels pathetic and unmanly *

Fix before selling as a few will be put off buying if they think they have to deal with the complexities of fitting a front mech.

Secondhand XT front mech will sell for under a £10, no hamr in fixing it but if you dn't want the hassle then just advertise it as that.

The mech will have the part number stamped inside the cage, eg. M590.
Seatpost size will be 29, 32 or 35mm and the mech may have an appropriate shim.

I would source a new one with the correct shim (or use the old one) and sell the bike with the new one in its box and let the new owner set it up.

The Deore top-swing are notorious for going rattly very quickly...conventional where possible for me.

all good advice, singlespeed it and turn the handybars back to front... increase the niche, increase the price.

Excellent advice as always! Thanks guys.

I can't help but feel that there really is wisdom on this forum!

* Hangs head in shame at having never tackled a front mech repair *

I'd buy it (if I was after another bike), but then I've got a garage full of spare front mechs at the minute...

It would make you wonder though if considering buying it, if the Front mech is karked, what else might be near dying as well?

cookeaa, it's obvious to me that you and this damn fine MTB would be perfect together. Imagine how much fun you'd have giving Sir Walter a right royal front mech fitting sesh...

There may be a few other tiny issues, but nothing major... 😉
