Would I be able to ...

[Closed] Would I be able to mount a tektro caliper on an avid or hayes mount?

Hi everyone, I'm thinking of upgrading my disc brake (tektro auriga comp) rotors to 8 inch from 7 but I'm wondering if the tektro caliper would fit to an avid/Hayes mount. Thanks for your help

In principle, [modern] calipers will fit suitable brackets from anyone else. I've certainly got a mix of stuff on mine.

Unusual I know, but sizing standards do seem to be adhered to with brakes.

In practice however, you'll maybe/probably end up trying different things to get it to work, but you can use pretty much any manufacturers bracket/adapter to get you there. The actual size of the caliper might limit what you can do, but going upwards should be [more] doable.

Assuming you are using a 'post-to-tab' mount (depending on your forks), Hope's HS20 bracket is a quick way of gaining an extra 20mm tab-to-tab (or just swap the whole bracket for one with an extra 20mm I guess).

A decent LBS will be good for this kinda thing.

Oh thanks for that OCB, I'm currently using is to post mount from tektro that came stock on my bike, so does that mean that if I upgrade my rotor to 8 inch and get a Hayes is to post mount for 203mm rotors I would be able to mount my tektro caliper on it?
Cheers

Sorry, I missed your reply ...

In theory (!) that sounds ok, but you'll need to be clear on the actual rotor size, and get the bracket to fit that size. You'll find what get called "8 inch rotors" could be 200mm or 203mm, and tho' not much difference, it's enough to be a PITA.

If you want to check, the standard is 74mm for the post mountings (ie between the posts measured C-T-C) and 51mm for the tab mountings. If that all checks out, it's usually just a case of getting the bracket with the right stand-off spacing, ie 180mm, 183mm, 200mm 203mm ... (as long as they are all the same 'standard', you are really only buying the manufacturers etching / logo at this point).

That said, some (mostly DH) forks are specific, I think Boxxers may have their own mounting, and some early suspension forks had a different standard (but that was 10+ years ago maybe now).

Not directly relevant, but maybe something else to have in mind of you read stuff online that brings it up, but some calipers have a rotor size constraint if you swap them front to back (and back to front of course). It's not necessarily a problem, just needs thinking through.

Take this at face value, but I think I read somewhere that there are maybe 31 different flavors of mounting bracket!
