Hi was wondering if the new M980 cranks would work on a 9 speed rear mech and cassett ? giving 2x9 ? thanks for any opinions .

Yes. 9 and 10 speed chains have the same pitch (or something) and will work on either 9 or 10 speed rings and cassettes. So I believe.
