I appear to have a complete mental block on understanding S.H.I.S. Please help me.

2011 Sultan. 44mm headset top and bottom. Tapered steerer revelation. I want to slack it out by 1.5 degrees. What fits?

they don't do a 1.5 for that combo as far as I can see, only a 1.0 degree change

I can't see a 1.5 degree headset for 44mm/44mm to fit tapered forks. Perhaps it doesn't fit as there is a 1 degree version. Maybe send works an email.

Tapered steerer on 44mm headtube is already pushing it, the tolerance on the external cup is pretty small; I'm actually amazed there is a 1 degree option 🙂 .

l.e. which one is it? I would have expected ZS44/EC44 or even EC44/EC44, but can't find any of these.
l.l.e. nvm, there is an EC44/EC44. Do note that it will increase your stack height.

I may be slacking it by 1 degrees then.

It makes sense that it would be limited to 1 degree. A tapered steerer, at 40mm diameter, is a reasonably tight fit in 44mm headtube. Obviously you need to reserve some of that 2mm difference for the wall thickness of the cup.

There must be a bit more than that. The external cup stands something like 16mm below, so allowing for the widest part of the taper being that much lower, there must be a bit more space higher up.

You are right, I don't have any parts to measure but a quick estimate of the taper gives about 1.5mm overall, so an extra 0.75mm each side to play with.

Either way, you guys are correct. Works have got back to me to confirm 1° only via an EC44/EC44. Thanks for the guidance.

Interesting. Didn't think they did one for a 44mm head tube and tapered fork. Need to have another look
