We're just back from a great week's riding in Portugal, but while there I sensed some looseness from the drivetrain. It turned out to be the cassette - I thought it was loose but it is actually the freehub which is flopping around a bit.

As someone who has never mastered Pro II hubs (I just cannot get them back together without them immediately seizing up when reinstalled for some reason, it always ends up in a ttrip to the bikeshop), what am I looking at having to do with this? I guess it's not likely to be the bearings? Send the wheel to Hope?

Thanks in advance

It really could be the bearings. Well that would be my second thought dependant on whether when I removed the wheel from the bike the free hub fell off or not. Basically if the axle is still intact then the bearings are a pretty good bet.

Thanks. No, I removed the wheel thinking the cassette was loose and freehub stayed on but is clearly playing back and forth.

Bearings eh? Did the front but put the rears in the "too hard" basket last year.

The bearings would have to be extremely bad- Hope use titchy bearings which is why they wear out so fast, but it also means that they don't have much room to wobble even when very knackered (why they tend to seize first)

Try and pull the freehub off entirely if you haven't already, see what happens. (it's possible the axle is broken but the freehub's being held on by the seal) Poke bearings with fingers, etc etc.

Basically more investigation needed- I jump to the conclusion it's the axle because pretty much any time anything goes wrong with my Pro 2s it's a broken or bent axle.

Cheers Northwind. It is a fair bit of play.

Too dark / wet to venture outside now, but I'll pull it to bits tomorrow and ask for help again then.....
