Yeah but the sidewalls are a bit porous and take a good bit of shaking/re-inflating before they seal totally

Yes. Plenty of latex and keep shaking till they stop fizzing.

hence my earlier post, I've had brand new contis not seal, old ones could be a nightmare

Old one were fine for me
I stuck some very old original ones on last summer without much issue
